Uber is launching a significant update aimed at enhancing the ride-sharing experience for senior riders this week, making it more accessible for both individuals and families. This initiative is part of Uber’s broader commitment to inclusivity in transportation, ensuring that older adults can navigate their mobility needs with ease and confidence.
As part of the innovative Family profile feature, the new Senior Accounts can be seamlessly connected to other riders’ accounts. This connection offers enhanced safety and payment functionalities. Family members can easily book rides, modify account settings on behalf of the senior rider, and communicate with the driver during the ride, fostering a supportive environment for those who may need assistance.

The app interface will undergo a thoughtful redesign to cater to the needs of senior users. Riders with Senior Accounts will benefit from larger text, a reduced number of buttons and ride options, and straightforward prompts displayed on their screens. This user-friendly approach, known as Simple Mode, can be activated even without linking a Senior Account to a family profile, allowing all users to enjoy a streamlined experience directly from their settings. Additionally, family members will have the capability to track rides in real-time, enhancing safety and peace of mind.

“The introduction of Senior Accounts and Simple Mode marks a pivotal step in Uber’s ongoing dedication to providing accessible transportation options,” said Ashu Manohar, director of product management at Uber. “These new features exemplify our commitment to designing technology that aligns with the needs of users at every stage of life, facilitating mobility and independence for seniors.”
In addition to these enhancements, Uber is introducing a variety of new payment options for Senior Accounts. This includes the ability to pay using a connected family member’s card or utilizing Medicare Flex cards, which are prepaid debit cards provided under the Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. This flexibility ensures that seniors have multiple convenient ways to manage their payments while using the service.
The rollout of Senior Accounts represents the latest development in a series of innovative upgrades to Uber’s driver fleet. These advancements include a recent collaboration with the U.S. Army and an expansion of their partnership with Waymo for autonomous vehicle technology.
In a similar vein, competitor Lyft launched Lyft Silver in May, which offers a comparable simplified app experience for older riders. This service features enlarged text, streamlined ride options, and round-the-clock live phone support. Lyft Silver can also be integrated into family accounts and joint wallets, as well as the Lyft Concierge program, which allows others to schedule rides on behalf of the rider, further enhancing accessibility and ease of use.
