Weekly Commentary (Updated Sept. 19, 2024): Greig Fraser earned his first Academy Award for his breathtaking cinematography in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Dune” (2022). As we watch for the upcoming awards season, Fraser’s stunning visuals—characterised by sweeping aerial pictures, Timothée Chalamet driving large sandworms, and a mesmerizing color palette—nonetheless depart an easy impression.
With high-profile initiatives like “Gladiator 2,” “Blitz” and “A Full Unknown” on the horizon, it is perhaps beautiful to not see Fraser, at minimal, throughout the mix for yet one more nomination, significantly given the Cinematographers Division’s observe doc of recognizing such artistry.
Additional to come back again.
