X is actively enhancing the functionality of its new X Money payments platform by mandating that creators participating in its Original Content Rewards and subscriptions programs receive their payouts exclusively through X Money. For creators in the U.S., this policy introduces a singular payment method without alternatives.
X communicated this update through the X Creators account within the application, stating: “Effective immediately, U.S. payouts for Original Content Rewards and Subscriptions will be processed via X Money.”
This change allows creators to access their payouts instantly upon release, eliminating the need to wait until they reach a specific payout threshold to withdraw their earnings.
Creators wishing to receive payments through X will need to verify their phone number within the app to activate an X Money account. They must also maintain a subscription to X Premium. Interestingly, this requirement aligns with the existing eligibility criteria for the creator monetization program, resulting in no significant alteration in prerequisites.
Creators outside the U.S. participating in the Original Content Rewards program will continue to receive payments through Stripe.
X Money entered beta testing in November 2025, leading to its broader implementation in the U.S. after X secured a payment support agreement with Cross River Bank to address regulatory concerns.
Cross River now facilitates X Money accounts, including a Visa debit card that allows ATM withdrawals directly from X Money profiles. this partnership indicates that X Money is not an independent service but operates within the regulatory framework established by the banking partner.
X has encountered numerous obstacles in obtaining approval for its payments service, with various states denying X’s money transmitter application partly due to the company’s connections to stakeholders in the Middle East.
The collaboration with Cross River Bank has enabled X to advance to the next phase, yet currently, X Money operates solely within the U.S., which restricts X’s potential to enhance this feature significantly within its app environment.
Regardless, X is determined to strengthen its payment infrastructure by designating X Money as the exclusive payment method for users in the U.S.
Simultaneously, X is addressing rising security issues associated with the increased flow of payments within the application.
Recently, TechCrunch reported that hackers are intensifying their efforts to breach X accounts to gain access to users’ X Money information.
X is actively working to mitigate this risk, but it presents another challenge as the company strives to transform X into an “everything app,” with payments being a crucial component of its expanded functionality.
