This week, three inexperienced climbers attempted to reach the summit of Mt. Shasta, a towering 14,179-foot peak located in California.
Their initial plan for an eight-hour ascent quickly transformed into a full-scale search-and-rescue operation, capturing national news due to an unexpected factor: the climbers heavily relied on artificial intelligence to strategize their expedition.
“We put too much faith in AI and not enough in our own judgment,” the climbers reportedly stated, as shared in a comprehensive report on their failed summit by the U.S. Forest Service – Shasta-Trinity National Forest on Facebook.

The failure of their expedition cannot be solely attributed to AI, as clarified by Nick Meyers, the lead climbing ranger for the National Forest Service, in an interview with Mashable.
Their climbing strategy was flawed, described by Meyers as being “like Swiss cheese,” filled with gaps that led to escalating challenges. The climbers’ dependence on AI, YouTube tutorials, and the AllTrails mobile app ultimately turned their adventure into a crisis.
Meyers, who also directs the Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center, noted that incidents involving AI on Mt. Shasta have increased this year, as visitors have received misleading information from AI sources. Nonetheless, this incident marked the first time that a rescue was necessary, he pointed out.
“AI can indeed be a valuable resource,” Meyers told Mashable. “However, when entering a hazardous environment like the wilderness, it’s crucial to consult a real person or at least verify the information obtained from AI.”
What Went Wrong with the Hikers’ Summit Plans?
Meyers indicated that AI correctly informed the climbers that reaching the summit would take eight hours. Following this advice, they packed enough food and water for that duration. It remains uncertain whether AI recommended additional supplies for emergencies.
AI suggested they consume simple carbohydrates instead of fats, citing that fats “take longer to digest.” Experienced mountaineers understand that fats can provide essential energy for demanding climbs that burn thousands of calories. Nonetheless, Meyers acknowledged that they at least brought food.
What the climbers failed to anticipate was their own climbing speed. Their ascent took twice as long as expected, totaling 16 hours.
At two separate points during their climb, the group considered turning back but ultimately decided to continue despite feeling unwell.

How Navigation Issues Compounded Their Challenges
The climbers depended on AllTrails for navigation, but their phone battery died by the time they reached the summit at 7 p.m. Their backup charger failed to work with the phone running the mapping app, forcing them to navigate by sight during their descent.
“If I were at the summit of a 14,000-foot peak and had to descend in darkness, I would definitely monitor my battery closely to ensure I could access my map,” Meyers stated. “That was a poor choice.”
Meyers noted that some individuals on Mt. Shasta make questionable decisions when fatigue and altitude affect their judgment.
The Rescue Operation for the Climbers
By 8 p.m., the climbers called 911 for assistance. Shortly after, at an elevation of 11,500 feet, one of the climbers fell and injured his knee. Despite having a headlamp, he opted to conserve its battery and relied on the light from his friends’ headlamps.
At midnight, the group stopped to camp but had no food, water, warm clothing, or emergency shelter.
The Forest Service climbing rangers located the group the following morning at 9:30 a.m. Meyers was not part of this rescue team as he was coordinating another potential helicopter rescue from a different location.
Ultimately, the helicopter was unable to reach the climbers due to strong winds. The group, accompanied by the climbing rangers, reached basecamp by 3 p.m. Members of the Siskiyou Search and Rescue assisted them in reaching the trailhead, which took an additional three hours.
Meyers emphasized that the Forest Service strives to use “the minimum means necessary” for mountain rescues, acknowledging the considerable effort and resources required for such operations.
Understanding the Unwritten Rules of Climbing
Chris Carr, co-owner of Shasta Mountain Guides, expressed his shock at the increasing number of climbers observed on Mt. Shasta making poor decisions and “breaking the unwritten rules” of mountaineering. This includes individuals attempting the summit without proper gear and continuing their climb late in the afternoon, which guarantees a descent in darkness.
He encourages aspiring climbers to familiarize themselves with the “ten essentials” of mountaineering.
“We are definitely noticing more individuals unprepared for this activity,” Carr told Mashable.
He speculated that a false sense of confidence may be developing among climbers, partly due to technology. The “supercomputers in our pockets” can create an illusion of security.
Carr advised that when using AI to plan a climb like summiting Mt. Shasta, climbers should treat it as a starting point to identify trustworthy resources for more detailed information.
