Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello are making headlines again as Joe shares his perspective on their split. The Modern Family actress has previously cited their age difference and conflicting views on parenthood as reasons for their separation in 2023. Joe’s upcoming memoir, Bloodlines, reveals a more complicated narrative about their final years together, prompting a subtle response from Sofía.
Explore the insights each of them has shared regarding their breakup below.
What Led to the Divorce of Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello?
Sofía first discussed the reasons for their breakup in a January 2024 interview with El País, a Spanish publication. She revealed that their differing visions for the future played a significant role in their decision to part ways.
“I’m newly divorced from my second husband, who I was with for ten years. My marriage ended because my husband was younger. He wanted to have children, while I didn’t want to be an older mother,” she explained.
Sofía became a mother to her son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, with her first husband, Joe Gonzalez, in 1991. She expressed her desire to embrace the role of a grandmother instead of starting anew as a mother, emphasizing that any future partner would need to have children of his own.
The couple announced their divorce in July 2023, nearly eight years after tying the knot in 2015, with Joe filing for divorce shortly thereafter. At that time, they released a joint statement.
“As two people who care deeply for each other, we kindly request respect for our privacy as we navigate this new chapter in our lives.”
What Revelations About Sofía Vergara Does Joe Manganiello Share in His Memoir?
Joe presents a starkly different account in Bloodlines. He discloses a seven-year struggle with an undiagnosed autoimmune disease that began shortly after their wedding, which culminated in emergency surgery in 2016 to remove part of his intestines, as reported by TMZ. Joe claims Sofía did not support him during his illness, even refusing to hug him, and criticized him for adopting a chihuahua named Bubbles in 2019. He challenges her narrative about their divorce, stating that he had given up the idea of fatherhood during his illness after multiple IVF attempts failed.
In an interview with People, Joe expressed his motivation behind writing the memoir. “This book was created because I want people to understand my true self, as I had to conceal who I was for a long time.”
Sofía has yet to respond directly to Joe’s allegations. On October 9, 2026, she reshared a post on Instagram from Manolo that compared the characteristics of a good man to those of a narcissist, which TMZ speculated could be a veiled reference to her ex-husband.
When Will Joe Manganiello’s Memoir Be Available?
Bloodlines is set to be released on October 13, 2026. Now that he is symptom-free and off medication, Joe looks forward to his future with fiancée Caitlin O’Connor. The couple made their first public appearance together on the red carpet in December 2023, and Joe proposed in October 2025.
