It has been 100 days since July 4, the last day Nolan Wells was seen alive. Since then, his body has been discovered near Horn Island. His family and friends held a heartfelt memorial service and laid him to rest. Two autopsy reports—one official and another independent—failed to identify the cause of his death. A grand jury concluded there wasn’t sufficient evidence to file criminal charges against anyone involved. Despite this setback, his parents are determined to uncover the truth surrounding their 19-year-old son’s passing and are advocating for a federal investigation. While their calls for action seem to have slowed, the Black community remains steadfast in its support for Nolan’s family, both online and offline. This is where Pastor Jamal Bryant and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church play a significant role. Recently, they organized a balloon release to honor Nolan, though this method has sparked mixed reactions.

Pastor Jamal Bryant Organizes Balloon Release in Memory of Nolan Wells
On Sunday, October 11, Pastor Jamal Bryant shared a video on Instagram featuring a gathering of supporters. He led the release of 1,000 white balloons into the sky as the crowd chanted “Nolan Wells.” In his post, Bryant expressed that the event represented a renewed commitment to seeking justice and closure for Nolan.
“Today marks 100 days since the death of #nolanwells. @newbirthmbc released 1000 balloons in his memory, renewing our commitment for justice and closure. A shut door doesn’t mean a shut case! Say his NAME #nolanwells”
Public Reactions to the Balloon Release: A Divided Response
Pastor Jamal Bryant’s Instagram post about the balloon release garnered over 5,600 comments within a day. While many appreciated the intentions behind the tribute, others raised concerns about the environmental impact of balloon releases. A study published in 2019 in Scientific Reports revealed that seagulls consuming marine debris were 32 times more likely to die from ingesting balloons compared to hard plastic. The comment section reflects this division.
@iamdrstewart commented, “So profound! As if we needed another reason to love @jamalhbryant & @mzkarribaby 😢🕊️❤️.”
@classic_mandee remarked, “Great intentions; however, the environmental litter caused by releasing balloons into the air is concerning.”
“As much as I think this is beautiful!!! His name should remain in the news until the family gets justice. But why aren’t people educated about the environmental impact of releasing all those balloons??? With the pollution we already have, it’s shocking that larger organizations don’t consider alternatives like butterflies or other options instead of balloons,” @sewdenisha expressed.
“No more balloon releases!!!!! They end up in our oceans, and farm animals eat them and get sick. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 RIP to this beautiful soul. 😢,” @princessk2sweet stated.
“This is extremely harmful to our environment. We should engage in more positive and productive actions in his name. Let’s do better,” @taxexpert added.
@wanderone2020 commented, “Thank you to the Bryants for not letting this go. Justice for Nolan. 🙏🏾.”
@aliciakees81 wrote, “This is beautiful, Pastor!!! We will always say his name! #NolanWells”
@elgupoviajero asked, “I thought balloons 🎈 were harmful to the environment 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️. Have they found out who is responsible? 🙏🙏🙏🙏”
“We will keep saying his name! Justice for Nolan and for all parents who have not received answers or justice from the system. 🙏🏾,” @klafree74 commented.
@jennh2018 shared, “Nolan Wells, fly high, baby boy 🕊️🩵. Rest in peace with our Heavenly Father 🙌🏻. We will NEVER forget your name, your beautiful face, and your vibrant personality. We will continue to support your parents in their pursuit of justice!”
“@jamalhbryant, please do not release Mylar balloons into the atmosphere!!! 😱,” @priceless_light urged.
Christine Wonsley Remains Resolute in the Fight for Justice
Nolan Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, has not publicly commented on Pastor Bryant’s balloon tribute or the actions of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. she has recently emphasized that her quest for justice is ongoing. On Saturday, October 10, she posted on Meta: “The question remains: WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO NOLAN WELLS?” Just days before, on October 7, Wonsley defended her relentless pursuit of the truth regarding her son’s death. She questioned the inconclusive results of the state autopsy and the documentation related to her son’s deceased body. It’s evident that Christine Wonsley is unwavering in her commitment to seeking justice for Nolan Wells, regardless of external opinions.
“🚨DO NOT come to my page and try to explain that, despite the lack of physical evidence of drowning in either autopsy report, I should accept my child’s death and move on. MANNER AND CAUSE: UNDETERMINED!!! Have you lost your minds?!? If YOUR CHILD DIED under these same circumstances, would you not fight for the truth?!? God has made me differently, and I WILL NOT stop. So please take your opinions, feelings, “prayers,” and everything else elsewhere if this is how you feel! If you’re tired of hearing about it, adjust your algorithm, but I stand firm for mine and will shout his name/story every day. It’s disheartening that the very people sending me hateful messages and comments are self-proclaimed Christians 🙄. Goodbye, and use those prayers for your own soul because some of you truly need it! THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR TRUE SUPPORTERS! We see you 🩵,” Wonsley expressed in her Meta post.
