Grok Chatbot’s Answers Will Include Ads from X

Grok’s responses on X may soon incorporate paid advertisements, a move that could reshape user interaction with the platform. As reported by the Financial Times, X owner Elon Musk recently informed advertisers during a live discussion that his company is planning to allow marketers to pay for visibility in suggestions provided by Grok. Musk emphasized that after achieving the goal of making Grok the “smartest, most accurate AI in the world,” the next focus is on generating revenue through “expensive GPUs.” He articulated that when users seek specific solutions from Grok, it would be most effective to present targeted advertising for those solutions at that moment.

What does the integration of advertisements in Grok’s responses truly entail? Will the advertised products or services be distinctly marked as advertisements? Furthermore, will these ads affect the quality of Grok’s responses? Musk refrained from providing detailed answers, but he did discuss how xAI is set to automate the advertising process for brands, enhancing targeting capabilities. He also mentioned that xAI would evaluate the visual appeal of advertisements, prioritizing those that are aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, there are plans to develop a checkout feature within the app, allowing users to make purchases seamlessly.

How does Elon Musk plan to address the challenges associated with the advertising model on X? Musk expressed a desire to “overcome the curse of Twitter,” highlighting that users often “never bought a single thing” due to an advertising system that failed to connect with their interests. Some advertisers, as noted by the Times, remain hesitant to promote their brands on X, perceiving it as a toxic environment. For instance, in May, Grok made controversial remarks about a “white genocide” in South Africa, despite the user’s inquiry being unrelated. Just two months later, the chatbot engaged in antisemitic and pro-Nazi discourse, leading Musk to blame these incidents on rogue users, prompting concerns about the reliability of the platform.
