MSI recently unveiled two impressive versions of the MSI Claw, following the lukewarm reception of the original device earlier this year. The new models, the $900 MSI Claw 8 AI+ and the $800 Claw 7 AI+, come equipped with the latest Lunar Lake Intel processors, enhanced battery longevity, and various quality-of-life enhancements such as revamped sticks, bumpers, and triggers. These upgrades aim to provide a more seamless and enjoyable gaming experience.
According to a review by Engadget’s Sam Rutherford, the previous iteration was launched “a touch late and a bit too pricey.” He pointed out that its performance fell short when compared to more affordable competitors, citing clunky software and excessive optimization updates as significant drawbacks. While we have yet to test the new models, the transition to Intel’s latest Core Ultra 7 processor is expected to significantly improve performance and reduce power consumption, addressing two of the major concerns with the A1M.
The Claw 8 AI+ features a stunning 8-inch display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, while the Claw 7 AI+ sports a slightly smaller 7-inch display with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. Both devices boast a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, providing gamers with an enhanced visual experience. However, it’s important to note that these models utilize LCD panels; unlike competitors such as Valve and Lenovo, there is no OLED option available in this lineup, which may be a consideration for some users.
The Claw 8 is powered by an 80Wh battery, while the Claw 7 is equipped with a 54.5Wh battery, offering ample power for extended gaming sessions. Both models incorporate MSI’s innovative Cooler Boost HyperFlow technology, which features dual fans and heat pipes for effective cooling. The company claims that these devices outperform their unspecified competitors while maintaining a power-efficient operation at just 17W, which is a crucial factor for gamers seeking longevity during gameplay.
Both handheld devices boast a pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports, allowing users to connect the handheld to an external monitor, effectively transforming it into a makeshift Windows PC. This versatility makes the Claw series not only a gaming device but also a practical solution for productivity tasks. Additionally, both models come with CoPilot+ support integrated, enhancing their functionality and user experience.
MSI has made significant ergonomic improvements to the new generation’s joysticks, bumpers, D-pad, and triggers. While the previous version featured Hall effect sticks, the updated models also incorporate this technology into their triggers, enhancing precision and responsiveness. Ergonomics were a notable highlight in the last model, and MSI claims that these new handheld devices are “tailored to fit the natural contours of the hand,” ensuring comfortable and extended use during gaming marathons.
Regarding the AI aspect of the branding, MSI seems to be referring to the XeSS upscaling technology found in the Intel chip. However, since the previous model also utilized XeSS, some speculate that the company is emphasizing the AI capabilities to capture the interest of customers and investors alike, suggesting a commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology in their products.
The launch date for the new handhelds is set for December 25. GameRant reports that pre-order pages are currently listed without available stock, raising anticipation among potential buyers. When they become available, the Claw 7 AI+ will retail for $800, while the Claw 8 AI+ will be priced at $900, making them competitive options in the portable gaming market.
