Simu Liu Aims to Bring Martial Arts Action to the Big Screen with Sleeping Dogs Film
Shang-Chi 2 may still be in the distant future, but in the meantime, renowned actor Simu Liu is eager to channel his impressive martial arts skills into a cinematic adaptation of the beloved 2012 action-crime video game, Sleeping Dogs. Recently, Liu has openly expressed his aspirations to create a film that never saw the light of day upon the game’s original release. According to reports from IGN, the doors may finally be opening for this project, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe star is reportedly collaborating with Square Enix to bring this vision to life. Liu not only aims to portray the lead character, police detective Wei Shen, but also intends to take on the role of producer. While there is currently no director or writer attached to the project, and the timeline remains uncertain, fans of the game should feel a renewed sense of excitement. Liu noted that despite the consistent popularity of crime and action films, the journey to bring this adaptation to Hollywood has been challenging. On January 31, he described the experience as “tiring” while pitching the film to executives who may not fully grasp the game’s essence. However, the overwhelming fan love for Sleeping Dogs has provided them with the motivation to persevere!
Should this project unfold successfully, Liu envisions the potential for the film to pave the way for a new installment in the Sleeping Dogs game series.
Exploring the Unique Gameplay Experience of Sleeping Dogs
If you missed the opportunity to play Sleeping Dogs upon its initial release, you can think of it as “GTA in Hong Kong.” Developed by United Front, this game was originally part of the True Crime series, offering players a gripping narrative where they assume the role of Wei Shen. In this immersive storyline, players infiltrate the Sun On Yee triad to dismantle the organization from within. One of the game’s standout features was its emphasis on martial arts combat rather than a heavy reliance on firearms—akin to the combat mechanics found in Batman: Arkham games. Players navigated missions that tested their loyalty to either the triads or the police, creating a complex narrative experience. The game received positive reviews and was set to have a sequel that would alternate between playing as Wei and a corrupt officer named Henry Fang. Unfortunately, the sequel was canceled, and United Front Studios closed its doors in 2016.
The Journey of the Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation
The movie adaptation of Sleeping Dogs was initially announced back in 2017, with renowned martial artist Donnie Yen slated to play the role of Wei. In a conversation with Polygon earlier this year, Yen shared insights into his own efforts to bring the film to fruition. Liu remains hopeful that he can incorporate both Yen and Will Yun Lee, who voiced Wei in the original game, into the project in some capacity. In addition, Liu has expressed a desire to have Lee reprise his role for any potential sequel games. Regardless of whether the film materializes, now may be the perfect opportunity to dive into Sleeping Dogs (which often goes on sale) and explore its rich narrative and engaging gameplay in the coming years.
