The game is now set to launch three weeks earlier on September 4.
For video game publishers planning releases in the latter half of 2026, the landscape is intensely competitive. Most publishers, with the exception of a few like Nintendo, are taking strategic measures to sidestep the highly-anticipated release of GTA 6. Among the numerous titles planned for the overcrowded September-October window, which includes GTA 6 launching on November 19, is Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Initially scheduled for September 25, the game will now be available earlier on September 4, as announced by Capcom.
This updated release date applies to all platforms, including PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and the upcoming Switch 2. Just a month ago, Capcom revealed the original launch date for this new mainline entry in the iconic historical fantasy action franchise, marking the first release since 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. For those looking for nostalgia, 2002’s Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny was remastered and released on modern consoles last year.
With the new launch date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, players can expect a bit more space in the gaming schedule. The previous September 25 release would have placed it in direct competition with other major titles such as Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall, both set to launch on September 24. Following the debut of Onimusha, the next significant release is Marvel’s Wolverine on September 15.
If the wait until September 4 feels too long, players can check out the demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword available now. Keep in mind that progress made in the demo will not carry over to the full game.
