Spotting Quality When Shopping for Clothes Online

Navigating the world of online clothing shopping can be quite challenging. Outfits that appear stylish on platforms like TikTok and Instagram often do not translate well in real life. Screens can obscure the quality of fabrics and the craftsmanship of garments, making it tough to identify well-made pieces. This uncertainty can make it daunting to spend your hard-earned money on clothing you cannot physically assess before purchasing.

Fortunately, you can equip yourself with knowledge before diving into online shopping. Here are essential tips to help you distinguish between flimsy fast fashion and high-quality clothing that can be treasured for generations.

How to Assess a Garment’s Material Against Its Intended Use

One of the most immediate indicators of a garment’s quality is its fabric composition. Dr. Rachel Lamarche-Beauchesne, a senior lecturer in Fashion Marketing and Enterprise at Torrens University Australia, emphasizes the importance of examining a garment’s fibre content.

“I find it unacceptable when ‘premium’ items are made with low-quality fabrics, like a blazer lined with 100% polyester, even when that blazer costs hundreds of dollars,” said Lamarche-Beauchesne. “I would never consider purchasing such an item.”

This doesn’t mean you should only focus on high-end fabrics like silk or cashmere. It’s essential to evaluate whether the material is appropriate for its intended use.

For instance, office wear should utilize fabrics that are comfortable against the skin for prolonged wear, such as cotton or linen. On the other hand, synthetic materials like polyester tend to be less breathable, which can be uncomfortable in warmer climates. Despite this, polyester is known for its durability, easy maintenance, and affordability, making it more suitable for workout clothing than for formal attire.

“For activewear or swimwear, with few exceptions, you will find that true synthetics such as nylon, polyester, and spandex are often necessary, and their performance will differ significantly from traditional materials,” explained Lamarche-Beauchesne.

When shopping online, fabric composition is typically listed in the product description. If you’re purchasing second-hand, seek out close-up images of the garment label. Platforms like Depop or eBay allow you to contact sellers, so don’t hesitate to inquire about fabric details if they are not provided in the listing.

It’s also vital to consider how each listed material is employed in the garment, such as whether it is used for the outer layer or the lining. Lamarche-Beauchesne points out that while polyester may not be ideal for a lining, semi-synthetic materials like rayon (also known as viscose, Tencel, or Lyocell) can serve this purpose effectively.

“All rayon variants are derived from cellulose, making them comfortable against the skin, suitable for linings or satin weaves that touch the body,” Lamarche-Beauchesne noted. “Additionally, if odour retention is a concern, polyester linings tend to trap smells more quickly than cellulose-based materials.”

She also prefers fabrics that are made from a single material whenever possible, such as 100% cotton knitwear. this guideline depends on the specific materials used, their qualities, and their proportions in the garment.

“A pair of jeans with a spandex-to-cotton ratio exceeding 2-3% is likely to stretch and become misshapen, as spandex fibers can extend more and are prone to wear,” explained Lamarche-Beauchesne. “I avoid jeans with polyester, yet I would consider a pair with a 2% spandex to 98% cotton ratio.”

How to Identify Quality Through Detail and Design

Selecting the right fabrics is crucial for identifying quality items when shopping online. the quality of materials can vary even among synthetics. Kinsen Siu, co-founder of IDA+S, emphasized that polyester can differ in quality just like natural fibers. IDA+S is an Australian clothing brand dedicated to creating versatile, practical, and durable pieces, named after Siu’s mother, co-founder of Lafayette 148.

“Quality polyester features tighter weaves that provide a more luxurious feel, finishing treatments that enhance softness, or attributes like moisture-wicking and anti-microbial properties in performance wear and athleisure,” Siu explained. “The challenge is that distinguishing between high-quality and low-quality polyester is often impossible based solely on fabric content.”

Examining the details and design of clothing is essential. Close-up images of high-quality garments can reveal information about the fabric, as well as demonstrate the care and craftsmanship that went into their creation. Some online retailers offer magnified product images that highlight details like buttonholes and linings. if only full-body images are available, they may obscure any shortcomings in the garment’s finish.

“A simple question to ask is: can you zoom in on the product photo?” Siu remarked, comparing the zoom capabilities of a faux leather jacket to those of IDA+S’ Isolde Leather Bomber Jacket. “One view gives you the overall appearance of the garment, while the other reveals intricate details like the leather’s grain and button design. If you observe the button’s pattern closely, you’ll see that it’s a horn button, which is a more sustainable and durable choice, albeit pricier.”

“Generally, the more detail a brand incorporates into their product, the more confidence they have in showcasing those features. Such details also allow you to assess the quality and density of the stitching.”

While zooming in on product images can provide valuable information, full-body shots are equally important. Pay attention to the model’s pose and whether it obscures any details about the garment’s drape. Analyzing the design, cut, fabric fall, and how it fits on the model can help you determine whether a purchase is worthwhile or a potential disappointment.

“Look for product designs that contour to the body,” said Lamarche-Beauchesne. Features like back waist elastics on bottoms are essential for comfort and durability. “While it’s challenging to gauge construction quality online, assessing the design, fit on the model, and other design choices can aid in making informed purchasing decisions.”

Understanding Pricing as a Quality Indicator

Higher price tags can suggest superior quality. Lamarche-Beauchesne noted that pricing often reflects the quality of materials used, and that a garment’s price-to-fiber ratio is a significant red flag when shopping online. It’s improbable that a $10 dress from Shein was constructed with the care and materials necessary for longevity.

While a higher price can indicate better construction, it does not guarantee quality.

“The fashion industry largely operates on a perceived-value model, where we attribute value to garments based on their branding,” said Lamarche-Beauchesne. “A premium-priced item often reflects a marketing strategy rather than a commitment to durable materials or craftsmanship. Consumers must remain vigilant in this regard.”

In September, TikTok fashion influencer Wisdom Kaye shared a video showing his new Miu Miu vest losing a button upon first wear. This vest was a replacement for an initial one that also lost a button shortly after purchase, alongside a jacket zipper failure.

The video went viral, garnering over 11 million views, and ignited discussions about declining quality in luxury fashion. Few consumers would expect such flaws from a brand like Miu Miu, known for charging thousands for single garments.

This example serves as a reminder that well-known brands and high prices do not automatically equate to quality. While pricing can provide insight, it is essential to conduct independent research and evaluate the material, details, and craftsmanship of garments.

How to Effectively Use Return Policies

Unfortunately, there are limits to what you can determine about clothing quality by examining photos online. The most reliable way to assess a garment is to see and feel it in person. Siu recommends purchasing items with the intention of returning them if they do not meet your expectations.

“Certain brands are confident in their quality, yet recognize that their clothing may not fit everyone,” Siu explained regarding return policies. “Review the return policy, make your purchase, try the items on, and be proactive about returning them if they aren’t right for you.”

When assessing a retailer’s return policy, check if they accept returns for change of mind, the timeframe for returns, who covers shipping costs, and if there are any restocking fees. IDA+S offers a Try Before You Buy service, allowing customers three days to try on items while their payment is on hold. Just remember to return them on time, or you might end up paying for clothes you do not want.

“Approach online shopping as if you are trying on clothes in a fitting room,” Siu advised. “Be prepared to initiate the return process. Although it’s inconvenient, it is equally inconvenient for the brand. High return rates indicate potential issues with product quality, prompting brands to investigate.”

Siu also suggests comparing clothing from unfamiliar brands with those from designers you already trust. Evaluate the details and quality of your favorite labels, and use that information to assess new brands you are interested in.

Research unfamiliar brands to gauge their credibility. According to Siu, a label without a visible founder may raise suspicion.

“I typically look for the ‘about us’ section and search for the founder’s name on Google or LinkedIn,” Siu noted. “Establishing a successful clothing brand is incredibly challenging. Every brand faces the hurdle of building awareness, which is the founder’s responsibility. If there are no details in the ‘about us’ section and no information about the founder, that should raise a significant red flag.”

Prioritize Purchasing Clothes You’ll Wear Frequently

When shopping online, factors such as fabric, details, drape, and pricing are crucial in identifying quality clothing. These elements can help you find garments that not only look and feel great but also stand the test of time. the most vital consideration is whether you will wear the piece regularly and if you are prepared to care for it appropriately.

“Consider a poly blend that you wear regularly for years versus a 100% linen shirt that you avoid because it requires ironing. It’s evident that one offers far greater utility,” Siu pointed out.

While fast fashion trends and clothing hauls can be entertaining, being mindful about quality clothing can help you maximize your investment, protect the environment, and elevate your personal style.
