Every so often, fans express their admiration for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, reminiscing about its exciting elements and wishing for another installment. This sentiment resonates deeply with enthusiasts who enjoyed the film. Unfortunately, despite its passionate fanbase, the movie did not perform well at the box office, leading Paramount to show no interest in pursuing a sequel, even though the original creative team is eager to continue the story.
During San Diego Comic-Con, co-writer and co-director Jonathan Goldstein shared that he, along with co-writers Michael Gilio and Johnathan Francis Daley, crafted a script for a potential sequel. Goldstein described the script as “something we think fans would like.” However, he conveyed to ScreenRant that the project is unlikely to materialize due to several financial constraints.
The financial challenges likely extend beyond the film’s disappointing theatrical performance, which grossed $208.2 million worldwide against a production budget of $150 million. Paramount is currently involved in a complicated acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a venture that, while paused until next year, carries significant financial implications. Amid this merger, Paramount has been busy securing deals with various filmmakers, including Travis Scott, to either acquire their projects or launch new entries in established franchises it manages. For instance, Goldstein and Daley are actively writing a new Star Trek film.
Although the sequel appears to be off the table, interest in adapting Dungeons & Dragons for the screen remains strong. A TV spinoff was announced for Paramount+ back in 2022, but those plans were scrapped two years later, with no other network stepping up to take on the project. Given the entertainment industry’s current focus on intellectual property, it’s likely that another opportunity to adapt this beloved franchise will arise sooner or later.
