Receiving a direct message on Instagram in a language you aren’t fluent in can be quite frustrating. Typically, you would need to copy the text, open a web browser, navigate to translate.google.com, and then translate the message before returning to the app to respond. Fortunately, Instagram launched a new feature in February that allows users to seamlessly translate messages directly within their DMs, simplifying the communication process.
With Instagram’s innovative message translation feature, staying connected with friends and family around the globe is now easier than ever. As highlighted in a press release from Instagram, “Whether you’re catching up with your cousins in Korea or your best friend in Spain, you can translate their messages right within your DMs.” This enhancement not only breaks down language barriers but also fosters closer relationships, enabling you to engage meaningfully with loved ones who may be far away.

Follow these easy steps to translate a message within Instagram Direct Messages and enhance your communication experience.
New Instagram DM features allow you to translate, schedule, and pin messages
Step 1: Initiate Translation by Holding Down on the Message
To start the translation process, press and hold the message you wish to translate. This action will prompt a menu with several options, including “reply,” “forward,” “copy,” “make AI image,” “translate,” “pin,” “delete for you,” and “report.” Simply select the “translate” option from the menu to proceed.
Step 2: Confirm Translation by Clicking “Translate”
Upon selecting “translate,” a prompt will appear on your first attempt informing you that “read messages in your preferred language” is now an option. Additionally, it states, “Text from messages you translate will be shared with Meta to provide translations.” This message will only appear the first time you attempt to use the translation feature. If you agree to the terms and wish to proceed, simply click “OK” to continue with the translation.

Step 3: View Your Translated Message Instantly
Once you click on “translate,” the translated version of the message will appear right below the original text. For example, if a friend sends you a Spanish lyric from Bad Bunny, such as “debí tirar más fotos,” the translation “should have taken more pictures” will be displayed beneath it, allowing for a clear and immediate understanding of the conversation.

While this translation feature is currently not available on the desktop version of Instagram, it can be utilized on both iOS and Android devices, making it accessible for mobile users worldwide.
