Tesla Cybercabs are now operational in select “limited areas” of Austin, Texas. As reported by NBC’s David Ingram, Tesla has published a specialized manual aimed at first responders who may encounter these vehicles in the event of a crash or malfunction. The manual provides guidance on how to safely manage these vehicles if they become obstructions.
This manual, which can be accessed in its entirety here, contains crucial information for first responders. While it’s common knowledge to exercise caution around large electric vehicle (EV) batteries, one of the key takeaways is that this manual pertains to a vehicle that lacks traditional steering wheels and pedals. So, what should you do if a Cybercab is halted in the middle of an intersection?
Primarily, the manual advises contacting Tesla directly, as they can maneuver the vehicle remotely. Nevertheless, it states that “In some situations where a Cybercab is operable,” it can be manually shifted using onboard vehicle controls. This aspect could be intriguing. there may be instances where this option is not available. In such cases, the manual elaborates:
“In situations where there is minimal risk of fire or high voltage exposure and low voltage power is present, Cybercab can be quickly pushed in order to clear the roadway.”
The specifics around when this applies remain vague. Generally, if a Cybercab is completely powered down, it should be treated like a large, immovable object that requires mechanical assistance to relocate. This is because moving the wheels might activate the motors, which can pose safety hazards.
“Pushing Cybercab when it is not in Neutral or Tow Mode can result in overheating the motor and potential risk of shock if electrical components are exposed.”
