SpaceX has recently announced a groundbreaking partnership with AI company Cursor, which may lead to the acquisition of Cursor for a staggering billion later this year. In a post on X, SpaceX stated, “SpaceXAI and @cursor_ai are now collaborating to develop the world’s most advanced coding and knowledge work AI.” This collaboration aims to redefine how AI integrates with software development, potentially transforming the coding landscape.
The agreement between SpaceX and Cursor provides an opportunity for SpaceX to either invest $10 billion into Cursor, renowned for its innovative AI coding tool, or pursue a full acquisition for $60 billion “later this year.” Should SpaceX decide to acquire Cursor, the timeline for its integration into Elon Musk’s expanding portfolio of companies remains uncertain. Earlier this year, SpaceX acquired xAI, Musk’s AI enterprise that also manages X. As SpaceX prepares for a public offering this summer, which is anticipated to become the largest initial public offering (IPO) in history, this partnership could significantly enhance its technological capabilities.
Cursor has reportedly been in discussions to secure its own $2 billion funding round and is widely recognized for its highly effective AI coding tool, also named Cursor. This platform has rapidly gained popularity among developers as a preferred coding solution. It enables users to leverage either its proprietary models or those from other leading AI firms such as OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI, thereby offering flexibility and choice to developers in their projects.
In their statement, Cursor expressed that the partnership with SpaceX will significantly “accelerate our model training efforts” while resolving previous infrastructure-related challenges that have hindered growth. The company noted, “We have been eager to enhance our training capabilities, but have faced limitations due to compute power.” This collaboration will allow their team to utilize xAI’s Colossus infrastructure to dramatically enhance the intelligence of their models for coding and beyond, paving the way for advanced AI applications.
