A tragic incident unfolded in Minnesota when a man fatally attacked his wife and their 7-year-old daughter during an event at their daycare, which they owned, as reported by police on Wednesday, August 12. The man is also accused of murdering a relative prior to the violent event at Brown Bear Childcare, before ultimately taking his own life.

Key Facts Surrounding the Minnesota Daycare Tragedy

According to the Hopkins Police, the 41-year-old suspect shot himself following the stabbing of his wife and child at their in-home daycare located in Hopkins, a suburb of Minneapolis. Authorities suspect that he had also fatally stabbed a 78-year-old relative at her residence prior to the daycare incident.

Fortunately, all six children present at Brown Bear Childcare during the attack were unharmed physically, as stated by officials. Police Chief Brent Johnson confirmed that another parent alerted authorities after witnessing the attack in the basement of the residence while dropping off a child.

“There’s no worse scenario than this, where you drop off your child somewhere you think is safe, and you get that phone call,” Johnson expressed during a press conference.

Records indicate that the daycare has been licensed by the state since 2019, with a maximum capacity of 10 children. It successfully met compliance standards during inspections in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The two-story brown house features a mural on the garage door depicting a tree-lined lake and a moose. Photos available on the daycare’s Facebook page show children playing with toys inside and in the backyard, adorned with vibrant decorations and artwork on the walls.

“This is a tragic day and horrific scene for little children to witness, if they did witness this,” Johnson added later.

Johnson remarked that such violent incidents are “rare” in Hopkins. He noted that the officers were deeply affected by the scene they encountered inside the home. “I could see the look on their faces; this is one of those cases that you’ll remember throughout your career, if not your entire life,” Johnson shared.

What Led Police to Discover the Deceased Relative?

More than three hours after the attacks, Burnsville Chief Matt Smith reported that officers were dispatched to a residence in his jurisdiction, approximately 20 miles from Hopkins. There, they found a woman who had been fatally stabbed. Investigators believe that the two violent incidents are interconnected, and that the suspect had been residing with the “close family relative.”

No names have been released by Minnesota police. Chief Brent Johnson mentioned that a clear motive has yet to be established, and there was no recorded history of police calls to the Hopkins address. He also indicated that it may take time for authorities to piece together the timeline of events connecting the killings in Hopkins and Burnsville.

Community Response to the Daycare Stabbings

Amanda Marx, a nurse living across the street, was unaware of the unfolding crisis until she saw police officers attempting to force entry into the home. She observed officers moving around the back of the house before returning and requesting crime scene tape. Subsequently, several young children exited the building, with one child being carried by an officer.

Marx noted that she and her 7-year-old son referred to the place as the “garage house” due to its colorful mural. The long-time resident mentioned that she had never met the owners of the home and was unaware they operated Brown Bear Childcare there. She did not recall any prior disturbances from the property.

“I’m just trying to figure out how to explain to my 7-year-old why there’s crime scene tape on our deck,” she commented.
