The highly anticipated robotaxi services from Uber and Waymo are now officially operational in Atlanta. This means that Uber users who request an UberX, Comfort, or Comfort Electric option might find themselves picked up by Waymo’s cutting-edge, all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicle at no extra charge. Importantly, customers will receive a notification prior to their ride, allowing them the choice to decline a self-driving vehicle if they prefer a traditional option. This innovation aims to enhance rider flexibility while integrating advanced technology into everyday travel.
Moreover, users eager to embrace this technology can increase their likelihood of experiencing a self-driving ride by adjusting their ride preferences. “Residents of Atlanta can now enjoy the same level of safety, comfort, and convenience that comes with Waymo’s fully autonomous driving technology, which millions across the US—from San Francisco to Austin—currently enjoy,” stated Nicole Gavel, the Head of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Waymo, in a recent announcement.
This launch marks the culmination of efforts that began with Waymo’s initial testing in Atlanta back in January 2018. Following that, last September, the company set expectations for its services to roll out in Georgia’s capital city by “early 2025.” If we consider the first half of the year as “early,” then Waymo is indeed making its entrance just in time.
In addition to the Atlanta launch, Uber shared updates on its Waymo fleet in Austin, which officially began operations in March. Currently, there are 100 Waymo vehicles operational in the city, with plans for expansion. According to Uber, the rides in these self-driving vehicles have garnered an impressive average rating of 4.9 stars from customers. However, the competitive landscape is evolving, as Tesla introduced its own robotaxi service on Sunday, June 22, adding a new layer of competition to the market.
