Reflex 2: NVIDIA Predicts Future Milliseconds in Gaming

NVIDIA has significantly enhanced its Reflex technology with the introduction of Reflex 2, a groundbreaking update that promises to revolutionize gaming performance. This latest version leverages advanced software techniques to achieve a remarkable reduction in gaming latency, boasting an impressive decrease of up to 75 percent. In the context of gaming, latency refers to the speed at which a game responds to player inputs, making this upgrade crucial for competitive gamers seeking a smoother and more responsive experience.

The mechanics behind this innovative technology are fascinating. Reflex 2 merges the existing Low Latency mode with a new feature known as Frame Warp. This cutting-edge technology assigns the CPU the task of predicting the next frame’s position while the GPU is still rendering the current frame. By utilizing player input, typically from a mouse, the CPU calculates the forthcoming camera position, enhancing the overall fluidity of gameplay.

The technology samples the anticipated camera position and integrates it with the current frame, waiting until the precise moment to display the most recent input on the screen. This foresight allows players to enhance their aiming accuracy and enemy tracking, providing a competitive edge in fast-paced gaming environments.

One might wonder how a pre-rendered image can overlay the current frame without causing visual discrepancies. NVIDIA has tackled this challenge by developing a latency-optimized predictive rendering algorithm, which utilizes information from previous frames to fill in any gaps. As a result, players are presented with a seamless new frame that reflects the updated camera position without any noticeable artifacts. The innovative process of “warping” the frame leads to a smoother visual experience.

NVIDIA showcased this groundbreaking technology using Embark Studio’s The Finals, which will be among the first titles to integrate this powerful toolset. The results speak for themselves; during testing on an RTX 5070 GPU at 4K resolution with maximum settings, latency levels were recorded at 56ms. The first version of Reflex achieved a latency reduction to 27ms, while Reflex 2 has taken that figure down to an astonishing 14ms, enhancing the gaming experience significantly.

In addition to The Finals, NVIDIA has announced that the popular game Valorant will also soon incorporate this advanced technology. The company boasts that Reflex 2, in conjunction with Frame Warp, has successfully lowered latency to an average of under 3ms. This revolutionary technology will debut as part of upcoming game updates, with additional support for other RTX GPUs expected to roll out in the future.
