Las Vegas has become a vibrant hub for Deadheads, especially after Useless & Firm’s second night at their Sphere residency. The band captivated audiences with a performance that was not only visually stunning but also described by many as one of their most intense shows to date. With fresh visuals and an electrifying atmosphere, attendees left feeling exhilarated and eager for more, solidifying the event as a must-see for fans and newcomers alike.
Those who anticipated a full showcase of the band’s new multimedia techniques during night one were pleasantly surprised on night two. This performance unveiled a diverse array of new visual elements throughout the three-and-a-half-hour show, featuring both innovative set pieces and some beloved visuals from the original 2024 Sphere run. It’s evident that co-creative director John Mayer is dedicated to enhancing the experience for fans, introducing fresh content continuously for the ongoing 2025 shows, ensuring each night offers something unique and memorable.

Two standout visual elements from Friday night’s show greatly enhanced the overall experience. The first was a captivating backdrop accompanying the extended 13-minute rendition of “Uncle John’s Band,” featuring towering dancers who animatedly interacted with one another behind the band. These performers added a dynamic layer to the performance, with their synchronized movements creating a euphoric atmosphere that perfectly complemented Mayer’s passionate guitar solos. The dancers’ fluid and vibrant choreography was mesmerizing, making the audience feel even more connected to the music.
The second major addition was an enormous digital tapestry that transformed the stage with intricate animations, moving gracefully across the backdrop. This surreal visual experience was rich in detail, offering viewers a feast for the eyes that enhanced the depth of the band’s extended jams. The animation echoed the grandeur of U2’s previous Sphere engagement, featuring a circus-themed tableau that included dozens of Uncle Sam coffins descending into a fantastical composting realm. This imaginative display captivated the audience, ensuring that no two performances would ever feel the same.

Another highlight of night two was a fresh twist on a fan-favorite animation: the iconic skeleton’s motorcycle ride. Following Uncle Sam’s entrance on a motorbike, which was a staple from previous nights, a new extended segment showcased the skeletal avatar navigating through a vibrant, neon-infused cartoon version of Las Vegas streets. Unlike the previous night, where the ride was abruptly cut off, this performance allowed the journey to continue for several minutes, delighting fans and enhancing the show’s overall energy.

The show also featured less elaborate but equally entertaining elements, such as a simple green-laser depiction of the band’s iconic dancing bear, ingeniously making use of the Sphere’s curved screen to create a sense of depth. However, some visuals from night one were notably absent, including the striking recreation of the back cover of “From the Mars Hotel,” which had previously been a highlight.
Fans who invested in a full weekend of shows undoubtedly felt their decision validated, as the unique visual content offered throughout all three nights promises to create a rich and diverse experience, complemented by musical setlists that change nightly, ensuring no repetition during the weekend.
Aside from the visuals, Friday’s performance was quickly acclaimed by fans as one of the finest since Useless & Firm’s inception a decade ago, emerging from the legacy of the Grateful Dead. While Thursday night’s feedback was somewhat tempered, with Variety noting that the first set leaned heavily on basic groove tracks, the second set showcased the band’s expansive and sophisticated sound. The structure of Friday’s show was notably different, particularly in the first half, which featured jazz-fusion elements that captivated the audience early on. Feedback from various channels confirmed the show was energetic and engaging from the very start of the first set to the finale.
Comments on Reddit showcased the excitement, with one user exclaiming it was “one of the top 5 D&C shows ever,” while others praised it as “a spectacular performance” and noted, “It was absolutely beautiful.” Critic Jim Harrington, writing for the San Jose Mercury News, highlighted the show under the title “Useless & Firm Bounced Back with a Vastly Superior Night 2 Performance,” stating that the musicianship was so exceptional that even the breathtaking Sphere graphics took a backseat to the band’s performance, a rare occurrence.
While much of the setlist may have been familiar to dedicated fans, the performance included a notable debut cover of Eric Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally,” which, although not previously performed by Useless & Firm, has been featured in the repertoire of the Jerry Garcia Band, drawing connections to the band’s rich history.
There were also some unexpected moments, such as Oteil Burbridge reclaiming the stage for an extended solo following Mickey Hart’s “Drums” segment, a departure from the usual return of all non-percussive instrumentalists for a quiet jam. This solo delighted fans and showcased Burbridge’s exceptional talent, adding a unique twist to the performance.
Additionally, the poignant homage to the late Phil Lesh, which made an appearance during Thursday’s show, returned to a more traditional format on Friday. The segment featured a newsreel voiceover alongside the band’s shadows in the window, resonating with fans while honoring Lesh’s legacy in a heartfelt manner.
