What Circumstances Led to the Fatal Confrontation?
The Memphis Police Department stated that the event occurred on Wednesday, July 15, around 1:45 a.m. at a residence on Travis Road in the Walker Homes area. Officers arrived at the scene to find 20-year-old Rodderius Morton lying in the front yard near the porch with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
Kendra Scott allegedly informed police that she found a man hiding under her daughter’s bed, claiming she “saw a dude under my kids’ bed, and I did what I had to do.” Investigators have since identified Scott as the individual involved, with a neighbor reporting hearing loud banging before discovering Morton injured on the porch.
What Did Witnesses Reveal About the Events of That Night?
The neighbor reportedly told authorities that he observed Scott standing outside with a firearm, stating, “I shot him, I shot him.” A girl present in the home revealed to investigators that Morton had been invited over and entered through the back door before Scott returned. The charging documents indicate that Scott arrived home around 1:30 a.m., knocking loudly and asking, “Who’s at my house?” The girl expressed fear as Scott appeared angry and was holding a gun, noting that Scott had previously made comments about her potential reactions if she found a boy inside the house.
What Charges Is Scott Facing as the Investigation Unfolds?
According to police, the girl eventually allowed Scott to enter the home, where Morton was allegedly hiding under the bed. She reported that when Morton tried to leave, Scott confronted him, leading to an argument before he attempted to head towards the front porch. Authorities allege that Scott followed him, and the girl heard a single gunshot.
Scott, 36, is charged with first-degree murder and the unlawful use of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. She is currently held without bond at the Shelby County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court as the legal proceedings advance.
