Apple is shifting its advertising strategy for Apple Maps, prioritizing local businesses and notable landmarks according to recently released advertising guidelines. The company has announced plans to introduce ads in its maps application by March 2026, with a tentative rollout expected this summer in the United States and Canada. These new regulations suggest that Apple Maps’ advertising experience may differ significantly from those offered by competing platforms.
The advertising guidelines outline specific prohibitions that align with Apple’s existing App Review standards. Prohibited content includes anything that is defamatory, profane, or promotes illegal activities. Apple will not allow ads that are misleading, drug-related, or political in nature. Notably, the guidelines specifically ban advertisements for “home services,” which sets Apple apart from other advertising platforms.
According to Apple, “Ad content that contains or directly or indirectly promotes home services — including but not limited to plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing, or general contracting services — is prohibited.”
While Google Maps commonly features ads for local service providers like electricians and plumbers, Apple aims to create a distinct user experience on its platform. This intention is reflected on the company’s Ads in Apple Maps landing page, which emphasizes the service’s role in exploration as much as in navigation:
People rely on Apple Maps to explore new places and try new things. From discovering coffee shops and restaurants to stores and landmarks, Maps is where “what’s around here?” turns into “I’m on my way.” Soon, local businesses can run ads on Apple Maps — precisely where customers are making decisions about where to go.
The idea of promoting pest control services may lack the charm associated with coffee shops, which could explain Apple’s decision to prioritize other types of businesses initially. By focusing on local businesses, landmarks, and points of interest, Apple aims to make its advertising efforts feel less intrusive and more aligned with user interests. The company’s stance against advertising for bail bonds and cryptocurrency ATMs further reinforces this commitment. Alternatively, Apple could choose to eliminate ads in Apple Maps altogether to maintain a cleaner user experience.
Advertising has become an increasingly important element of Apple’s “Services” division, which encompasses its subscription offerings, platform fees for in-app purchases, and ad sales. Alongside the expansion into Apple Maps, the company provides advertising opportunities within Apple News, where the quality of ads has often been criticized, as well as in various sections of the App Store. In 2022, Apple announced significant updates to its App Store advertising strategy, extending ad placements beyond search results to app pages and the Today section on the App Store’s main screen. For the time being, Apple appears to be adopting a more cautious approach with advertising in Maps.
