Published
Jason Collins, a groundbreaking figure in the NBA, received a heartfelt tribute at the 2026 ESPYs. His twin brother, Jarron, accepted the award on his behalf and expressed to TMZ Sports how deeply humbling the experience was.
Earlier this year, Jason tragically passed away due to an aggressive form of brain cancer. He was recognized for his significant contributions to the NBA, especially for being the first openly gay active player in major professional sports.
A powerful video chronicled Jason’s historic announcement in 2013, illustrating his courageous battle with health issues and highlighting the enduring impact he made within the sports community.
Receiving the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage posthumously, Jason’s legacy was honored with Jarron proudly accepting the accolade.
Jarron expressed how meaningful this recognition was, particularly given Jason’s passion for tennis and his admiration for Arthur Ashe.
“We feel incredibly grateful,” Jarron remarked, “and we appreciate the recognition of my brother’s remarkable life.”
Jarron shared that the family is managing well, although they continue to navigate their grief following Jason’s passing.
Jason passed away on May 12, and his loss resonated throughout the NBA. Teams honored him with moments of silence, reflecting on his role as an ambassador for the sport.
In his speech on Wednesday, Jarron emphasized his commitment to preserving his brother’s legacy and ensuring that Jason’s influence endures.
