Discover the Fascinating Holiday Villains in Amazon’s Red One
Amazon’s Red One introduces a captivating array of holiday-themed villains that will keep audiences entertained, including mischievous evil snowmen and a chilling winter witch known as Grýla. Grýla draws inspiration from a legendary figure in Icelandic folklore, adding a unique cultural twist to the film’s narrative. Also making a memorable appearance is Krampus, cleverly reimagined as the adoptive brother of Santa Claus, portrayed by Game of Thrones’ Kristofer Hivju. This interpretation gives Krampus a fresh dimension, and depending on your perspective, he might just steal the show while also being portrayed as particularly attractive.
Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Alluring Look of Krampus
In an engaging conversation with Variety, Kristofer Hivju, costume designer L.J. Shannon, and makeup artist Joel Harlow shared insights into the creative process that brought Krampus’ striking suit to life. L.J. Shannon emphasized the importance of making Krampus appealing: “Whenever I’m creating a creature, my team makes fun of me because I’m like, ‘I want chicks to dig him. He’s got to be hot.’” This dedication to creating a lovable creature ensures that the character is not only visually compelling but also relatable, inviting viewers to cheer for him despite his villainous tendencies. Hivju echoed these thoughts, reminiscing about Shannon’s playful inquiries regarding his desired physique and the effort invested in presenting Krampus as an enjoyable “hedonistic half-god” that audiences would adore.
The Intricate Design Elements of Krampus’ Costume
Visually, the character of Krampus in Red One is a feast for the eyes, featuring a meticulously crafted suit adorned with six impressive horns, detailed hands, gloves, jagged teeth, and specialized lenses. Joel Harlow highlighted the complexity involved in creating the horns: “You have to have an under-skull that supports those horns, which needs to blend seamlessly with the silicone skin, which [also] needs to blend seamlessly with the hair pieces that go on top.” For Hivju, donning this elaborate costume was a time-consuming process, initially taking four hours but later streamlined to two and a half hours. He likened the experience to the extensive makeup process experienced by Colin Farrell for his role as The Penguin. Despite experiencing skin irritation from the costume, Hivju concluded that the visual impact was well worth the discomfort.
