Concerns Grow Over a Single Billionaire Family Controlling a Significant Portion of US Entertainment Media
The Writers Guild of America East and Writers Guild of America West have united to file an antitrust lawsuit against the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance. This legal action alleges that the merger breaches US antitrust legislation and inflicts specific economic harm on writers.
The unions’ complaint expresses serious concerns that “the combined entity of Paramount and Warner Bros. would possess both the motive and means to reduce expenses by lowering writers’ salaries and cutting back on production.” This situation would lead to diminished pay and fewer job opportunities for writers. the lawsuit warns that decreased competition may push remaining studios to focus on “the safest projects,” stifling innovation and the emergence of unique creative voices. The complaint references past mergers, including the 2022 Warner Bros.-Discovery merger and the anticipated 2025 Paramount-Skydance merger, as examples where such consolidations typically resulted in layoffs and financial austerity.
On the previous day, 12 state attorneys general launched a separate antitrust lawsuit aimed at blocking the merger. Paramount secured approval for the $110 billion transaction in June, following an intense battle to fend off an initial acquisition attempt by Netflix for a segment of the Warner Bros. Discovery business.
