Discoverable Servers on Discord Are Becoming More Accessible to Search Engines.
Discord is set to implement a significant policy update that enhances the visibility of interactions within its most popular public servers. On November 16, the platform will introduce Server Web Pages for all Discoverable Servers. These pages will provide key details about each server, including descriptions and summaries of ongoing discussions in their public channels. By mid-December, users may notice that messages shared in these channels could be displayed verbatim on both the Server Web Pages and in search results on platforms like Google. It’s important to note that neither the summaries nor the individual messages will reveal the usernames or avatars of the users who posted them.
The motivation behind this change is to facilitate easier access to information from these communities through web searches. Essentially, users may begin encountering Discord pages and messages in a manner similar to how they find Reddit threads or other online content.
This update pertains solely to Discoverable Servers, which are large communities with a minimum of 1,000 members that do not require an invitation for joining. Private servers, direct messages, and group direct messages will retain their privacy settings. given that Discord has recently faced criticism regarding its age verification policies, this new decision could spark additional concerns about user privacy and data handling.
Administrators of Discoverable Servers can proactively choose to opt-out of having specific channels included in their future web presence. Individual users also have the option to prevent their posts from being indexed by adjusting settings in the Data and Privacy section of Discord’s User Settings. In certain regions, including the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, channel messages will be disabled by default to comply with local regulations. users in these areas will need to opt-in manually to enable this feature. Discord users who are teenagers will not have the ability to activate channel messages until they reach adulthood.
