On Friday, February 28, an episode of Angie Martinez’s podcast, ‘IRL,’ featuring Ashanti was released on YouTube. Approximately thirty-eight minutes into their engaging conversation, Martinez addressed the significant topic of Gotti’s recent passing. She gently asked Ashanti how she has been coping with the profound loss of the Murder Inc. founder, which has affected many in the music industry.
“Definitely unexpected — it was a lot to process,” Ashanti shared with heartfelt emotion. “I experienced a whirlwind of different feelings and emotions, you know… and I think honestly, what I said is how I feel… I was really sad, and I’m still sad it ended like this because there was a time when things were truly amazing between us.”
Continuing her thoughts, Ashanti emphasized that in her “heart,” she has always “wished for peace” for both herself and Gotti.
“I wished peace for him, I prayed for him to find peace, and you just — you don’t really see this coming, you know what I mean? It really just came out of nowhere.” Ashanti expressed.

As the discussion progressed, Ashanti candidly reflected on the ups and downs of her relationship with Gotti, contemplating whether they could have reconciled their differences. She shared her genuine desire for a positive outcome.
“I really wanted it to happen,” Ashanti admitted. “… Like I said, we made history together, which is infinite… and I’m sad that the last few years we weren’t seeing eye to eye. [But] what I do know is that I tried. I do know that I extended the olive branch… I just wanted things to be cool between us!”
Moreover, Ashanti reminisced about the times when their relationship faced significant challenges. Despite those difficulties, she always spoke highly of Gotti because she “will always be thankful” for the pivotal role he played in her career.
