The cinematic landscape of 2026 has been significantly influenced by directors emerging from YouTube, achieving remarkable success at the box office. Notable films like Curry Barker’s Obsession and Kane Parsons’ Backrooms have captured audience attention with their innovative, low-budget horror narratives. The trend began earlier in the year when Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach’s film Iron Lung secured the number two position during its opening weekend, trailing only Sam Raimi’s Send Help and surpassing a documentary about Melania Trump.
What makes Iron Lung particularly noteworthy is its self-financed nature. Unlike Obsession and Backrooms, which received support from Focus Features and A24 respectively, Markiplier’s adaptation of the 2022 video game was independently produced and distributed through his own Markiplier Studios. His substantial YouTube following, boasting nearly 39 million subscribers, undoubtedly contributed to the film’s impressive $50 million box-office earnings. Now, Markiplier is leveraging his influence to assist other creators in navigating their projects.
In a recent interview with IndieWire, Markiplier shared insights on his journey since Iron Lung made waves in the film industry.
“I’ve had numerous discussions with various studios, some of which have been productive while others have not,” he stated. “These conversations have been valuable as they indicate a growing interest in what creators can bring to the table.”
He elaborated, “I enjoy being in this position because I aim to support fellow creators in realizing their visions. I’m already starting projects with a few friends. I’ve played facilitator—connecting these studios with individuals who might be ideal for directing opportunities. That has been incredibly rewarding, and I feel empowered to drive positive change.”
Markiplier expressed his surprise at the overall positive experiences he has had with studios. “I’ve come to realize that within the Hollywood system, there are many genuine individuals who truly want to create art, and that gives me hope,” he conveyed to IndieWire.
Looking ahead, Markiplier acknowledged that he took on too many roles in Iron Lung. He is open to relinquishing some control in his next project, once he determines what direction he wants to take. “I believe there are concepts that are larger than what I can manage alone. There’s an optimism that comes from conversing with these companies; it’s reassuring to see passionate people who genuinely believe in the creative process.”
Nevertheless, he remains mindful of his journey. “You must prioritize your own needs, but if you remain authentic to the [audience], they will reciprocate and support you when needed. This loyalty is a valuable currency that is often difficult to quantify … Creators intuitively understand this.”
Iron Lung is currently available for purchase or rental on YouTube.
