Over two years have passed since Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released from incarceration, where she spent nearly eight years for her involvement in the tragic 2015 murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. In 2016, Gypsy accepted a plea deal for second-degree murder, leading to a 10-year prison sentence. She completed most of her sentence and was granted parole in December 2023. Recently, old prison calls featuring Gypsy have emerged on social media, igniting controversy due to her prior racist comments.

Revelations from Gypsy Rose’s Prison Conversations
In August, previously recorded prison calls involving Gypsy began to circulate on TikTok and YouTube. These recordings showcase Gypsy discussing her life behind bars and various subjects with family and friends. Among those featured in the calls are her father, Rod Blanchard, and stepmother, Kristy Blanchard. Additionally, some calls reportedly include her current boyfriend, Ken Urker, and her ex-husband, Ryan Anderson.
Several clips gained notoriety after Gypsy used a racially derogatory term during a conversation with Ryan. In one instance, Gypsy expressed her frustration about noisy individuals in prison, stating, “All these fing Black nrs are so loud,” Gypsy remarked. As Ryan continued the conversation, Gypsy pressed, “Did you hear me?”, reiterating, “I said all these fing Black nrs are so loud.”
Ryan responded with humor, quipping, “I swear that hood just came out.” He then asked, “Where you burning the cross at tonight?” The pair shared laughter during this exchange, with Ryan adding, “Oh, baby. My baby is a racist.” Gypsy denied any racist intent, claiming she was merely “stating the obvious.”
In another call that went viral, Ryan asked Gypsy if she thought he was racist. “Well, I know I joke about your sister dating a Black guy, but do you really think I’m racist?” Ryan inquired. Gypsy replied, “That’s so different.”
Ryan acknowledged the distinction before further questioning how Gypsy perceived him. “Well, I know it’s not even in the same ballpark, and I’m not saying it is. I’m just asking, do you really think I’m that way?” Gypsy then shared her perspective, stating, “I’ll be open all day long and say that I am.” Ryan probed if she would express those sentiments directly to her sister. “No, to her face, never. No,” Gypsy responded.
Gypsy Rose and Ryan Offer Apologies for Past Racist Remarks
As the recordings spread online, Gypsy Rose posted a heartfelt apology on TikTok, accompanied by a caption stating, “I’m sorry.” She took responsibility for her racist remarks and expressed regret to the Black community. Gypsy also reached out to her sister, Mia Blanchard, and Mia’s fiancé, Andre, addressing the hurtful comments she made regarding their interracial relationship.
“I used racist language and made hurtful, disrespectful comments, including about people I love, my sister Mia and her fiancé Andre. What I said was wrong. Those words were racist, and I take full responsibility for my actions. There is no justification for that language or the pain it has caused. To the Black community, I sincerely apologize for using words that carry such hate and disrespect. I fully understand the anger and disappointment those words evoke.”
Gypsy then directed her apologies to Mia and Andre, acknowledging the pain her words inflicted upon them.
“To Mia and Andre, I am particularly sorry. You didn’t deserve that then, and you certainly don’t deserve the hurt now. Since returning home, being able to connect with both of you has meant the world to me, and it is heartbreaking that my words have caused such pain and damaged our trust. I’ve apologized privately, and I realize that forgiveness or reconciliation is not something I can demand. I respect any boundaries you may need, and I understand that healing takes time.”
Gypsy emphasized that her past words and attitudes do not reflect who she is today.
“The words and attitudes expressed in those calls do not represent who I am now or what I believe. I reject them completely. I understand that stating this is not enough; my future actions must show my commitment to change. I cannot undo what I said, but I can fully acknowledge it, learn from it, and strive to be better every single day.”
She concluded by acknowledging that she does not expect immediate forgiveness and reiterated her remorse.
“I’m not asking for anyone to forget or to forgive me right away. Trust is built through consistent actions, and I accept that some may never see me differently. That is their right. I wanted to make this statement, not because these calls became public, but because I should never have spoken those words in the first place. To everyone I hurt, especially Mia and Andre, I am genuinely sorry.”
Following the emergence of the prison calls, Ryan also addressed the situation, posting a video to apologize amid backlash over his own controversial comments from the recordings.
“I make mistakes because I am human and not perfect. I sincerely apologize if I have offended anyone. I’m sorry.” Ryan added a caption to the video, stating, “I am human and make mistakes all the time, but you learn and grow from them… #teamryan.”
