In a surprising turn of events, the vehicle featured in Deadpool and Wolverine has outperformed the film itself. Until this week, the R-rated Marvel sequel from 2024 held the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film, amassing a remarkable $1.34 billion globally. This week, however, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has taken that title, now recognized as the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.
This twist is particularly amusing considering that in Deadpool and Wolverine, the lead characters engage in a memorable brawl inside a Honda Odyssey. I had almost forgotten this detail until Ryan Reynolds shared a video celebrating Nolan and his team’s achievement.
Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car. pic.twitter.com/s7QzTza21l

It’s quite peculiar that Deadpool and Wolverine contains such a running joke about Odysseys, only for a film titled The Odyssey to surpass its record. This phenomenon underscores the timeless nature of Homer’s original narrative, which significantly influenced Nolan’s work and how audiences have embraced it. There appears to be an intriguing connection between the two. Perhaps.
Now, with The Odyssey claiming the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film—previously held by Deadpool and Wolverine, which had taken it from Todd Phillips’ Joker—the question arises: how much higher can it climb? Last weekend, during its fifth week in theaters, The Odyssey maintained its position as the second highest-grossing film, outperforming all new releases like The End of Oak Street. Though its reign at the top may not last indefinitely, every additional $3 to $4 million it earns elevates its position on the charts.
In terms of worldwide box office rankings, The Odyssey now sits at 23rd or 24th place, setting its sights on breaking into the top 20. achieving this will be challenging, as it requires nearly another $100 million to reach that milestone.
Simultaneously, The Odyssey faces competition from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has already surpassed the top 20. Currently, it is positioned around number 8, but it still trails the top spot by approximately $800 million, held by the original Avatar. That record seems unlikely to be broken anytime soon. The all-time domestic box office record, currently $937 million, belongs to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which appears somewhat more within reach for Spidey, who needs only about $140 million more and has plenty of time left on the calendar to achieve this goal.
