In 2027, the legendary horror franchise The Exorcist makes a thrilling return. After the disappointing reception of the 2023 reboot, which struggled to engage audiences, acclaimed horror director Mike Flanagan has recruited Scarlett Johansson for an exciting new chapter. Now, fans are eager to learn about The Exorcist: Martyrs.
Esquire has unveiled the first look and essential details about this highly anticipated film, set to premiere in theaters on March 12, 2027. The storyline centers around Johansson’s character, an NYPD homicide detective who investigates a case leading to the execution of a serial killer named Father Sunday, portrayed by John Leguizamo. the execution takes an unexpected turn, introducing two priests played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laurence Fishburne into the narrative. Sasha Calle joins the cast as a fellow detective, while Jacobi Jupe, from Hamnet, plays Johansson’s 12-year-old son.
How do all these elements intertwine? The film takes inspiration from crime procedural dramas. Flanagan explained, “How can we explore those ideas in a serial-killer thriller in a way that merges these subgenres, drawing elements from classics like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs while also embracing the essence of The Exorcist?” He elaborated on the theme of individuals being influenced or even controlled by evil forces.
This narrative indeed includes themes of demonic possession. it remains ambiguous whether the possession is solely linked to the executed serial killer or extends to the detective’s son, which seems to be a plausible assumption. Flanagan remarked, “It does have that one job from the title. We do have to deliver that for sure. But we aspire to go beyond a mere possession story. The connections to the serial-killer mystery are where it gets really exciting, shifting the possession from the confines of a bedroom and parental strife to a much grander scale.”
Flanagan, known for his work on the upcoming adaptation of Carrie, hinted that while this film will relate to previous entries in the Exorcist series, it stands as a distinct narrative.
“The primary goal is to assure audiences that they’re not witnessing a repeat of The Exorcist,” Flanagan emphasized. “They’re not experiencing any attempt to reboot or remake the Friedkin film. Instead, they will discover a story within the Exorcist universe that has not been explored before, offering a unique take that diverges from past narratives. That’s the hope. We’re creating something very, very different from what people might expect.”
