Tinder has significantly influenced the contemporary dating culture by prioritizing physical appearance, and now the app is experimenting with an innovative approach to leverage this trend. According to a report by TechCrunch, select subscribers of Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum will soon have the option to specify a preferred height range for potential matches. This feature was first discovered by a user on Reddit, who found the new setting within the app’s Discovery Settings.
By opting for matches who are at least 5’10”, users may still encounter shorter individuals, but this preference will certainly shape the suggestions provided by the app during the swiping process. Over the years, Tinder has allowed users to express their preferences in their profiles, with many going to great lengths in their bios to indicate they only swipe right on profiles that meet certain criteria or share specific interests. Incorporating height preferences directly into the official settings not only formalizes these choices but also enhances the user experience.
This new feature, while seemingly trivial, taps into the existing perceptions surrounding dating apps and their often superficial nature, hinting at a more provocative stance from Tinder. It may also signify a shift in how Tinder views its premium subscriptions: not merely as a way to broaden your dating profile’s visibility, but as a means to exert greater control over your matching preferences.
According to Phil Price Fry, the VP of Communications at Tinder, “This innovation is part of a larger initiative aimed at facilitating more intentional connections on Tinder. Our new guiding principles influence every decision we make, and this particular feature aligns with our commitment to prioritize user outcomes, act swiftly, and learn rapidly.” He further elaborated, “Not every test results in a permanent feature, but each test provides valuable insights into how we can enhance user experiences and advance the dating category.”
Regardless of whether the height preference setting becomes a permanent feature, it won’t eliminate the issue of users misrepresenting themselves in their dating profiles. As noted by TechCrunch, Tinder has previously joked about the possibility of implementing height verification measures to address this concern.
