If you own an iPhone capable of running iOS 18, you’re in for an exciting update! You can now download and install the public beta version of iOS 18.2, which introduces several innovative features designed to enhance your user experience. One of the standout capabilities is the ability to share the location of lost items linked to Apple’s Find My network with individuals outside your immediate contacts. This feature can be particularly beneficial in situations where you might need assistance from a stranger to locate your misplaced belongings.
To utilize this feature, simply select “Share Item Location” in the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. This action will enable you to generate a shareable link that displays the precise location of your lost item. The individual receiving the link can access it on any device, and importantly, they will also see your Apple account email and/or phone number, facilitating communication. Additionally, you’ll have the capability to track how many people have accessed the link, which remains active until you recover your item or for a week if it remains unfound.
This feature not only allows you to connect with helpful strangers but also enables you to share the locations of lost AirTags and other Find My accessories with specific airlines. Apple has collaborated with various airlines to seamlessly integrate this functionality into their systems. Access to each Share Item Location link is restricted to a select number of airline staff, who must authenticate their identity using an Apple Account or a partner email address prior to accessing the shared information.
In the upcoming months, more than 15 airlines, including prominent names like Aer Lingus, Air Canada, British Airways, and Delta Air Lines, will begin supporting this feature. Apple has indicated that additional airlines are expected to join this initiative to assist in tracking down lost or delayed luggage. This collaborative effort aims to improve the travel experience by minimizing the frustration of mishandled baggage.
Furthermore, SITA, a leader in air transport technology, is integrating the Share Item Location feature into its WorldTracer baggage-tracking system. This system is utilized by over 500 airlines and ground handlers at more than 2,800 airports worldwide, significantly enhancing the efficiency of baggage recovery processes.
It’s important to note that while testing beta software like iOS 18.2 can be exciting, it does come with certain risks. Users may encounter more frequent bugs, and some applications or features may not function as intended by Apple. If you are willing to navigate these potential issues and wish to experience iOS 18.2 ahead of its official release, you can activate Beta Updates in the Software Updates section of your device’s Settings menu. The full rollout of iOS 18.2 is anticipated in December.
As a bonus, if you’re looking to enhance your Apple device experience, there’s a promotional event currently taking place. You can purchase a four-pack of AirTags at an unprecedented low price of $70, making it an excellent opportunity to secure your belongings.
