The NYT‘s latest word game has rapidly gained popularity across social media platforms. The Times credits its associate puzzle editor, Wyna Liu, for the innovative design and successful integration of this game into the publications’ Games section. Connections is accessible on both web browsers and mobile devices, inviting players to group four related words together based on shared themes or characteristics.
Each puzzle consists of 16 words, which players must categorize into four distinct groups. These groups can encompass a wide array of topics, including book titles, software applications, geographical locations, and more. While many words may appear to fit together, only one specific grouping will be deemed correct, adding an intriguing layer of challenge to the game.

When players successfully identify all four words within a set, those words are eliminated from the board, clearing the path for further guesses. However, making an incorrect guess counts as a mistake, and players are allowed a maximum of four mistakes before the game concludes, intensifying the excitement and challenge.
Players can easily rearrange and shuffle the board, which facilitates the identification of connections between the words. Additionally, each group of words is color-coded, with yellow representing the easiest group, followed by green, blue, and purple. Similar to Wordle, players have the opportunity to share their results on social media, fostering friendly competition and engagement.
