In recent years, Google has ingeniously integrated Gemini into almost every application and service it provides. From the AI-driven inbox in Gmail to the chat sidebar in Chrome, Gemini has become an omnipresent feature within Google Workspace. Personally, I find that I do not require an AI to assist me with basic functions, such as writing a =SUM formula in Sheets or outlining a first draft. For many users, including myself, Gemini often serves as more of a distraction than a help. If you’re feeling similarly overwhelmed by this integration, this comprehensive guide will provide you with the steps necessary to disable it.
Step-by-Step Guide to Disabling Gemini from Your Personal Workspace Account

To successfully disable Gemini, you need to turn off two distinct groups of features. The first group consists of functionalities, including smart compose, which are shared across Gmail, Chat, and Meet. Disabling these features in one application will automatically turn them off in all three. The easiest way to manage this is through the Gmail web client.
-
First, open Gmail and click on the cog icon located in the top right corner.
-
Within the General tab, scroll down until you locate the Smart features section.
-
Uncheck the option labeled Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
For users located in regions such as Japan, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or the European Economic Area, smart features are disabled by default, reducing the need for these steps.
Next, shift your focus to modifying settings for Google Workspace.
-
Again, access Gmail and click on the cog icon.
-
Under the General tab, scroll down and select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
-
Switch off options for smart features in Google Workspace as well as Smart features in other Google products.
Be advised: completely disabling smart features in Google Workspace will not only turn off Gemini integration but also remove access to essential functionalities such as spelling and grammar corrections. You will also forfeit features that have been mainstays of Google services for several years. For instance, in Gmail, the application will no longer organize incoming emails by priority and will show a notification at the top of the screen indicating that smart features are required for inbox categorization. This design choice may discourage users from opting out of Gemini integration.

If you’re looking to eliminate Gemini while still benefiting from other features provided by Google in Gmail and related applications, I suggest keeping the initial group of smart features enabled while specifically disabling the Workspace-related options. You also have the flexibility to customize your preferences by deactivating certain features within the first group while retaining others. Below is a detailed list of those features, along with brief explanations for the less straightforward ones.
-
Smart Compose — while composing an email, Gmail will provide predictive writing suggestions to enhance your productivity.
-
Smart Compose Personalization — as you write, Gmail will adjust its suggestions to align with your unique writing style.
-
Nudges — Gmail will send reminders prompting you to respond to or follow up on any unanswered emails.
-
Smart Reply — Gmail will generate thoughtful suggestions for how to respond to incoming emails.
-
Package Tracking — Google will display real-time shipping updates directly within your Gmail interface.
-
Desktop Notifications — Interestingly, you need the assistance of AI to receive notifications on your PC.
Regrettably, Google does not provide the same level of detailed control for smart features within Google Workspace. For example, if you disable Gemini in Docs, your Calendar will not automatically sync events from Gmail. Once more, Google’s design appears to discourage users from opting out of Gemini.
Effective Steps to Disable Gemini from Your Professional Workspace Account
If your workplace utilizes Google Workspace, all the aforementioned options should be accessible in the settings menu of Gmail. You can follow the same procedures to deactivate most of the smart features that Google has to offer. However, it is important to note that the latter part of the process will have no effect. You will still encounter Gemini in Docs, Sheets, and other applications, even if the smart features in Workspace are disabled. Only your admin has the authority to completely disable Gemini for your account.
