Colossal Squid Captured in Unprecedented Deep Sea Footage

Scientists have recently achieved a remarkable feat by capturing rare footage of a colossal squid, a creature that has long fascinated marine biologists and ocean enthusiasts alike. This enormous species, known scientifically as the colossal squid, has now been filmed in its natural habitat, adding to our understanding of deep-sea life.

The colossal squid, scientifically named Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, was first formally documented by biologists in 1925, making its existence known for nearly a century. These elusive creatures inhabit only the frigid waters of the Antarctic, making them extremely difficult to study. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of the Schmidt Ocean Institute, an innovative ocean exploration group, high-tech robotic technology has allowed researchers to capture the very first confirmed footage of the colossal squid thriving in its remote and natural marine environment.

“It’s thrilling to witness the initial in situ footage of a juvenile colossal squid, and it’s humbling to realize that they are completely unaware of human existence,” stated Kat Bolstad, a renowned cephalopod expert at the Auckland University of Technology, who played a crucial role in validating the footage. “For the past century, our encounters with these magnificent creatures have primarily been through their remains found in the stomachs of whales and seabirds, or as formidable predators of commercially harvested toothfish.”

“This observation is genuinely one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve had throughout my research career focused on deep-sea cephalopods,” Bolstad expressed during a press conference held on April 15, emphasizing the significance of this groundbreaking discovery.

The colossal squid captured in this footage is a juvenile, measuring only about a foot long. However, mature specimens can grow to an astounding length of approximately 23 feet, with some potentially even larger. These magnificent creatures can weigh over 1,100 pounds, making them not only the heaviest squid but also the heaviest invertebrate known to science. Notably, they possess the largest eyes of any animal on Earth, measuring around 10.5 inches across, comparable to the size of a soccer ball, which aids them in navigating the dark depths of their oceanic home.

The groundbreaking footage was recorded by the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s ROV SuBastian, an advanced robotic vehicle equipped with a variety of scientific instruments and capable of reaching depths of 14,763 feet, or 4,500 meters. On March 9, the ROV filmed the colossal squid while it was swimming at a depth of approximately 1,968 feet, or 600 meters, beneath the ocean’s surface, showcasing the incredible capabilities of modern marine exploration technology.

This remarkable footage marks the third occasion that ROV SuBastian has successfully captured the first-ever live footage of a squid species in its natural habitat. Previous successful captures include the Spirula spirula, commonly known as the Ram’s Horn Squid, in 2020, and another species called Promachoteuthis.

Deploying such advanced robotic technology into the ocean’s depths regularly unveils rare and unprecedented footage of marine life. “Every time we venture into the deep sea, we make new discoveries. There’s always something novel waiting to be uncovered,” commented Derek Sowers, an expedition lead for NOAA Ocean Exploration, highlighting the importance of these explorations.

Marine scientists are eager to illuminate the mysteries of the deep sea — both literally and figuratively. Understanding what resides in these depths is crucial, particularly as deep-sea mineral prospectors prepare to utilize industrial machinery across various regions of the seafloor. Biologists stress the importance of safeguarding rare biodiversity and unique marine habitats. Furthermore, research expeditions have shown that the ocean’s unique life forms hold immense potential for groundbreaking medicines. “Systematic searches for new pharmaceuticals have demonstrated that marine invertebrates produce a greater variety of antibiotic, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory compounds than any group of terrestrial organisms,” notes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, emphasizing the ocean’s potential for medicinal discoveries.

“There exists life in the depths that not only has the potential to offer us solutions but has already contributed to our medical advancements,” Jyotika Virmani, an esteemed oceanographer and executive director of the Schmidt Ocean Institute, remarked in an interview with Mashable last year, underlining the significance of continued exploration and research in the ocean.
