AI Detector Fails to Identify Images Created by Meta

Meta’s latest AI detection tool is not functioning as effectively as promised, according to a recent analysis.

Earlier this week, Meta unveiled its inaugural image generation model, Muse Image. Alongside this launch, the tech company introduced an invisible watermarking system called Content Seal, which is embedded in all images produced by the model. This watermark is designed to remain intact even when users crop, compress, resize, or screenshot the AI-generated images, as claimed by Meta. To assist in recognizing this Content Seal signal, Meta also introduced a preview of an AI detection tool aimed at verifying whether an image was created by Muse Image.

A report released on Friday by Reuters revealed that the AI detection tool struggled to identify more than half of the images it generated after they had been cropped. In initial testing, Reuters found that the tool accurately recognized all 40 images produced by Muse Image as AI-generated. Yet, when those images were cropped to half or one-third of their original dimensions, the detection tool could only identify 55% as AI-generated.

As generative AI technologies advance in producing realistic deepfakes, the challenge of detection becomes increasingly complex. Cybersecurity firm DeepStrike reported that the volume of AI-generated deepfakes online is expected to grow by approximately 900% annually from 2023 to 2025. advancements in detection capabilities have not kept pace with this surge in AI-generated content. Commercial AI detection tools, which rely on AI themselves, continue to face numerous errors, while studies indicate that the average person’s ability to discern AI-generated content is no better than random chance.

Despite not achieving immediate success, Meta aims to bridge this gap with the new Content Seal and its detection tool.

Muse Image and its related offerings were intended to represent a significant advancement for Meta, which has been perceived as lagging behind its competitors in the AI domain. Last year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared the necessity for a transformative AI initiative, announcing a comprehensive turnaround strategy. This plan included investing billions into research and development while recruiting top talent from various competitors in the industry, all in pursuit of creating superior AI products and ultimately striving for artificial superintelligence.

After investing an additional several billion dollars into AI and undergoing further restructuring, Meta launched the first substantial outcome of this effort in April with Muse Spark, a proprietary model that the company intends to open-source in the future. This initiative received a mixed reception. The recent debut of Muse Image marked another significant development.

However, the launch of the image generator and its associated tools has faced criticism, not only due to the Reuters findings. Instagram users expressed concern when they discovered that the AI model could utilize photos from any public profile without obtaining explicit consent from the profile owner. This feature has since been removed.

Looking ahead, the company is preparing for its next significant generative AI release: a video generator named Muse Video. It remains to be seen if the company can resolve existing detection tool shortcomings and adequately address users’ privacy issues before this model is introduced.
