High-ranking executives from World of Tanks development studios Wargaming and Lesta Games may face the seizure of their ownership stakes by the Russian government, as reported by prominent Russian news outlets RIA and RBC. Wargaming is known for creating the global version of World of Tanks, while Lesta Games manages a separate version specifically for the Russian market. This development highlights the ongoing tensions between the gaming industry and political actions in Russia.
According to reports, Malik Khatazhaev, the CEO of Lesta Games, and Viktor Kisly, the CEO of Wargaming, are being accused of engaging in extremist activities by the Russian Prosecutor General, which is equivalent to the Attorney General in the United States. This accusation stems from Wargaming‘s support for Ukraine, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict that has garnered international attention. The Prosecutor General’s office is seeking to confiscate all shares held by these executives in their respective firms, raising concerns about the implications for the gaming industry in Russia.
A representative from Wargaming provided a statement to Engadget, clarifying the company’s position: “Wargaming made a strategic exit from the Russian and Belarusian markets three years ago. The company transferred its operations in these regions to local management at no cost, ensuring a debt-free and cash-free transition, with no intent to reclaim these assets. Currently, Wargaming holds no business interests or assets in Russia or Belarus.” This statement underscores the company’s commitment to distancing itself from the ongoing political issues.
The development of World of Tanks underwent a significant transition in 2022, coinciding with Wargaming‘s exit from its offices in Russia and Belarus. This shift resulted in the transfer of the development responsibilities for the Russian version of the game to Lesta Games. This change occurred amidst a backdrop of escalating conflict, as Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In response to the humanitarian crisis, Wargaming initiated a fundraising campaign within World of Tanks in 2023, aimed at providing medical assistance to those affected in Ukraine. However, the Russian government has interpreted this pro-Ukrainian initiative as an act of extremist activity, which raises questions about the implications for both companies.
Lesta Games responded to the allegations through a statement shared on their company Telegram channel, as reported by RBC. The statement affirmed, “The company operates in full compliance with the laws of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, and therefore, we have no concerns or need to conceal any information. We have not breached any laws and have nothing to fear.” This defense highlights Lesta Games‘ position and their commitment to legal compliance in the face of serious accusations.
