Widow’s Bay Unveils Its Most Hilarious and Heartfelt Episode

Last week, the series “Beach Reads” showcased Widow’s Bay once more, delivering a witch-themed party that danced between moments of joy and deep embarrassment—mostly the latter. the Apple TV show, currently one of the most unexpected gems in streaming, reached a new pinnacle with the episode titled “What to Expect on Your Trip.”

This episode shifts its attention back to Mayor Tom Loftis, who is grappling with an unwanted, disorienting, and often terrifying emotional experience, aided by potent magic mushrooms that can only be found on a cursed island.

The scene opens with a patch of black mushrooms nestled in the snow. A mysterious figure appears in the background—unfamiliar based on their hair and attire—and collapses, moaning, before crawling toward the mushrooms and consuming them.

In Widow’s Bay, it is the morning after Tom’s encounter with the sea hag, Patricia’s cocktail mishap, and the shocking revelation of Reverend Bryce’s suicide inside the church. At the town hall, Tom instructs Dale to implement a curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., disregarding the planned community fireworks.

Tom has also grounded Evan in his office for safety and out of frustration with the teenager’s disobedience. keeping Evan confined will prove challenging, especially with the easily distracted Ruth watching over him. Tension simmers between father and son.

At this moment, Tom must visit the nearby church for a memorial service for Bryce. Meanwhile, Patricia and Wyck sift through Bryce’s disorganized office, finding little of significance. Tom spots an inscription on Bryce’s desk that reads “My eye is open” and discovers a stash of black mushrooms. When Tom checks the phone log, he sees that Bryce attempted to contact him multiple times the night before, as well as calling another number repeatedly.

They dial that number, and Patricia manages to secure an address and an “appointment” with the individual who answers. Upon their arrival, they meet Todd, a former classmate of Patricia’s, who refers to her as “Patty.” He insists he is not a drug dealer, but rather “a shaman.” (In reality, he is clearly a drug dealer portrayed by comedian Chris Fleming, adding a delightful guest star element.)

When Tom presents the mushrooms, the shaman immediately recognizes them. “That is a brutal ride,” he declares. “That stuff will take you where you need to go, whether you want to or not.”

Known as “Truesight,” this mushroom variety is unique to the island and is said to provide clarity akin to undergoing “LASIK for your third eye. It opens that thing right up. Pow!”

Todd then shares a troubling tale about another individual who consumed the mushrooms and returned profoundly changed. Nevertheless, Wyck remains undeterred after Bryce’s fate. He expresses his intention to try the mushrooms, hoping to gain cosmic insight and rescue Widow’s Bay.

This plan takes a twist when Todd mistakenly assumes Tom is Wyck and inadvertently slips the mushroom concoction into Tom’s tea, which the mayor unknowingly drinks to the last drop.

As the realization dawns on everyone regarding the mix-up, a frantic Tom must confront the impending psychedelic experience amidst a town in turmoil and his fractured relationship with Evan. “Don’t squander this,” Wyck cautions him. If the mushrooms hold any truths, it is now up to Tom to uncover them.

While Tom spirals into chaos, viewers of Widow’s Bay are treated to rich comedic moments as Tom, under the influence of mushrooms, navigates his routine civic duties. Matthew Rhys shines as Tom, showcasing his comedic talents in “What to Expect on Your Trip” as he interacts with colleagues, Sheriff Clemons, and faces a room full of local business owners outraged over the curfew.

Most of these individuals remain unaware that Tom is barely holding onto his sanity, experiencing blackouts, panic episodes, and auditory hallucinations. He often wakes in unfamiliar locations, confused about his actions. Compounding his distress, Evan has gone missing, having escaped Tom’s office.

We know exactly where Evan is. He is out with his stoner friends and some visiting girls, who show little interest in the local legend of the Boogeyman. While Patricia has mentioned it before, this episode dives deeper into the lore. The tale suggests that a killer who refused to die was sealed inside his home by the townspeople, where he supposedly remains to this day.

As this transpires, Wyck visits the museum to show Gerrie a peculiar scrap of paper he discovered in Bryce’s office. Their friendly exchange reveals that they were childhood sweethearts.

Simultaneously, Patricia and Tom, with Tom restrained due to his erratic behavior, also arrive at the museum. Gerrie, Wyck, and Patricia recognize the paper as a page ripped from Sarah Warren’s diary, a notable figure in Widow’s Bay’s history. Sarah, the second wife of the town’s founder, had strong criticisms of him in what appears to be her final entry. She described him as violent and fixated on a “cursed” item he wore around his neck, a small cylinder seen in his museum portrait.

“I wonder if he was buried with it,” Wyck speculates. this mystery takes a backseat as Tom continues to interrupt with unhelpful questions, demanding to know Evan’s whereabouts.

The next time Tom regains consciousness, he finds Rosemary driving him home, though she insists on making a brief stop. Flash forward, and the aftermath of Tom’s chaotic behavior is revealed (his loafer left abandoned in a puddle of milk!).

As for Evan, he is up to his usual antics. It’s dark, and the town’s new curfew has long passed. The group of kids—who have been smoking weed throughout the day—dare Evan to venture into the Boogeyman’s house. He complies, getting as far as opening the front door. Fortunately for him, Sheriff Clemons arrives just in time to shoo him away from “the creepy house.”

Clemons lets Evan off with a mild reprimand, but his fun day abruptly ends when he returns home to find Tom—still in a state of chaos—yelling at him in front of his friends. It’s an embarrassing scene for everyone involved. The argument escalates into the Loftis household, where Evan labels his father a “shitty mayor” and questions why they never leave the island. “It was essential to your mother that you be raised here,” Tom responds, though it sounds insincere.

“And never go anywhere?” Evan retorts. This does seem excessively restrictive, especially in the current context. The frustrated teenager warns his father that one day he will leave Widow’s Bay and never return.

As Tom trudges upstairs, his already challenging day takes one final downturn. As he vomits the mushroom-laced contents of his stomach, he is flooded with memories of happier times spent with Lauren, his late wife, and Evan’s mother.

In the memory, she appears heavily pregnant, which is distressing since Tom previously revealed that Lauren died due to complications from childbirth. They are on a ferry departing Widow’s Bay when everything suddenly changes.

“I can’t see anything!” she cries out. The boat quickly returns, and she ends up giving birth back on the island.

Tom watches himself relive this traumatic event. The doctor reassures him that the baby is healthy, but Lauren is not okay: she is motionless in bed, vacant eyes, and her head tilted unnaturally.

Tom sobs at this haunting recollection, helping us understand why he has been so hesitant to recognize the supernatural abnormalities surrounding Widow’s Bay. This experience has impacted him profoundly; he struggles to confront this truth. In this moment of vulnerability, he whispers a desperate plea to God to safeguard Evan. “I will do anything,” he implores.

And in a chilling response, something answers his call. It likely isn’t God. Whatever it is emits a sinister rumble, seemingly intrigued by the idea of a bargain. Is it the influence of the mushrooms, or could it be the malevolent force enveloping Widow’s Bay responding to his plea?

New episodes of Widow’s Bay premiere every Wednesday on Apple TV+.
