Recently, exciting news emerged about the Wheel of Time franchise being transformed into an immersive open-world role-playing game by Iwot Studios, a branch of the production company responsible for the acclaimed show. This announcement may seem unbelievable, but Iwot has confirmed that this project is indeed in the works and aims to reinvigorate the fantasy series within the gaming medium. Fans of the series can look forward to an experience that promises to capture the essence of Robert Jordan’s remarkable universe in a way that engages both seasoned players and newcomers alike.
Before this thrilling revelation, Iwot secured the Wheel rights back in 2004 under the banner of Red Eagle Entertainment, yet little progress had been made since then. Consequently, skepticism has been prevalent among Wheel enthusiasts. However, Iwot co-founder Rick Selvage and game studio head Craig Alexander reassured IGN that their commitment to this project is steadfast. They are determined to honor the rich legacy of the Wheel of Time series while navigating the challenges of game development.
With the Prime Video adaptation of the Robert Jordan novels recently completing its third season, Selvage noted that it seemed like the “perfect moment” to embark on this gaming venture. Alexander shared that they are currently in the pre-production phase, actively seeking leadership talent as well as a team to develop a prototype. The ambitious plan includes hiring a staff that could range from “200 to 300” individuals dedicated to realizing the full scope of this exciting project, which highlights their commitment to quality and depth in the game.
“It’s going to take time,” Alexander stated, emphasizing the complexity of the entire process. Both he and Selvage are very forward-thinking, with plans for sequels, downloadable content (DLC), and expansion paths designed to “extend the world as much as we can.” This strategic approach showcases their vision for a comprehensive gaming universe that could enhance the overall Wheel of Time experience for players.
Alexander expressed that creating the initial game presents the “most difficult” challenge, focusing on the right scope and ensuring that “we deliver a compelling, high-quality release” while also laying the groundwork for future successes. He likened their strategy to that of a live-service game, with ongoing operations to support the Wheel of Time franchise “for the long term.” With a vast narrative to explore, they are aware of the extensive effort required to fully realize this world, but their determination remains strong.
As for additional specifics regarding the game, including its setting and potential platforms, discussions are ongoing. What Selvage and Alexander have confirmed is that it will not be a massively multiplayer online game (MMO). Alexander, drawing from his previous experience with Lord of the Rings Online, noted that the franchise is “so character-centric,” suggesting a focus on storytelling. Instead, it may evolve into a single-player experience with elements of multiplayer gameplay, reminiscent of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Ultimately, both Selvage and Alexander emphasized their commitment to treating this game with the same level of care and dedication as they do for the Wheel of Time show and the upcoming prequel movie. Their goal is to “deliver on our commitments in a manner that excites fans and meets their high expectations.”
