Oh Arcane, how I’ve missed you.
Netflix’s League of Legends-based series took the world by storm when it premiered in 2021, captivating even those unfamiliar with the League universe! Despite my initial ignorance regarding the source material, I was completely drawn into the immersive experience Arcane provides. This series showcases a meticulously crafted fantasy world filled with vibrant factions and intricate character dynamics. From the stunning animation that elevates the storytelling to the breathtaking displays of magical abilities and adrenaline-pumping action sequences, it’s hard to find anything that rivals this level of artistry in animation. The visual experience alone is a compelling reason to dive into this captivating series.
You don’t have to play ‘League of Legends’ to enjoy the masterful animation of Netflix’s ‘Arcane’
With Arcane Season 1 setting such a high standard, I was anxious about whether its second and sadly final season could possibly measure up. Fortunately, Season 2 not only meets expectations but surpasses them in remarkable ways. The first six episodes available for review elevate the stakes to breathtaking, and often unexpected, new heights. This season is a brutal, beautiful, and utterly devastating journey that demands immediate attention as each new batch of episodes is released. The emotional depth and the stakes involved make it a must-watch for fans of the series.

Let’s dive into the core reason for eagerly awaiting Arcane Season 2: the fate of characters after the explosive finale of Season 1. The cliffhanger left us questioning who managed to survive the catastrophic explosion caused by Jinx’s attack.

For three long years, fans have speculated about the fates of key figures like Hextech creator Jayce (voiced by Kevin Alejandro), Piltover Councilor Mel (voiced by Toks Olagundoye), and the brilliant inventor Viktor (voiced by Harry Lloyd). Following Jinx’s (voiced by Fallout‘s Ella Purnell) devastating shark rocket attack on the Council of Piltover, Arcane quickly reveals that there are indeed survivors (I’ll refrain from spoiling their identities). However, the aftermath of the attack also brings heartbreaking losses that significantly influence Piltover’s response to the explosion.
‘Flow’ review: An animated animal adventure unlike anything you’ve seen before
As the Council hastily voted to grant the undercity of Zaun sovereignty mere moments before Jinx’s rocket struck, that opportunity for peace has officially vanished. Now, the relationship between the twin cities is on the brink of total war. Mel’s mother, the Noxian warlord Ambessa (voiced by Ellen Thomas), is prepared to impose martial law. Yet, Enforcer Caitlyn (voiced by Katie Leung), grappling with her own profound loss, has plans of her own. She forms a strike team that includes herself and Jinx’s sister Vi (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) to confront Jinx decisively, especially as Jinx has become a beacon of resistance for the Zaunites. The stage is set for an intense showdown reminiscent of a family feud.

The anticipated clash between Vi and Jinx encapsulates what makes Arcane so masterful in its portrayal of conflict. While there is an undeniable thrill in watching two exceptional fighters engage in intense combat with supercharged gauntlets and weapons, the emotional weight of their history adds layers to the battle. The tension is amplified by the love and shared experiences that once united them, now overshadowed by the horror of their transformation into adversaries. This tragic undertone permeates not only their confrontation but also the broader narrative of war within the universe of Arcane.

War has a profound effect on every character in Arcane, often pushing them to extremes that starkly contrast their personalities from Season 1. Vi finds herself aligning with the Enforcers despite their role in her parents’ deaths, believing it to be a necessary evil. Meanwhile, Caitlyn, overwhelmed by grief, transforms into a vengeful force in her pursuit of Jinx, unleashing chaos upon the Zaunites. This transformation is particularly disheartening to witness, as the story delves into themes of chemical warfare and police brutality that have become the grim reality in Zaun. Characters we’ve come to love are corrupted by power and vengeance, emphasizing the tragic consequences of conflict.

While Arcane‘s marketing emphasizes that this season centers on the theme of war and its impact on the fractured relationship between Vi and Jinx, Season 2 also ventures into intriguingly bizarre territory. The advancements in Hextech technology challenge the limits of possibility in Piltover, sparking discussions around transhumanism that are both unsettling and hopeful. These conversations serve as a reminder that the world of Arcane extends far beyond the conflict between these two cities, diving into a universe rich with complexity and strangeness.

This intrigue extends further with the introduction of new forms of magic and additional factions for the characters of Arcane to navigate. While this expansion is thrilling, it also raises concerns about whether the series can effectively wrap up its numerous loose ends. Can the remaining episodes of the season manage to provide satisfying conclusions to all these intricate plotlines, especially given the rapid pacing of Arcane? At times, I find myself wishing these episodes were longer than the standard 40 minutes, which is not something I say lightly. Nevertheless, Arcane has consistently impressed me, leaving me hopeful for its ability to successfully conclude while juggling its many complex narratives.
How Arcane is Redefining Animated Television

Even if Arcane doesn’t achieve a flawless conclusion, its visual brilliance is undeniable. The animation team at Fortiche has always delivered exceptional work, and Season 2 somehow elevates the already high bar even further.
We are once again treated to a breathtaking blend of hand-painted artistry and computer-generated animation that brings Piltover’s majestic towers and Zaun’s gritty streets to life. This season, Arcane experiments with animation styles that reflect the unique perspectives of different characters. We glimpsed this technique in Season 1, where Jinx’s viewpoint was illustrated through scribbled line drawings and overlay text. However, Season 2 takes this concept to new heights.
We continue to witness Jinx’s frenzied doodles, but now we also experience entire sequences rendered in striking black-and-white charcoal art, vibrant comic book-style neon panels, and evocative watercolor flashbacks. The unpredictable nature of Hextech technology allows animators to unleash their creativity, resulting in surreal flesh-and-metal fusions, mind-bending cosmic landscapes, and fantastical architecture that echoes the warped biology found in Annihilation. In one of Season 2’s boldest choices, the narrative immerses us in the perspective of the monstrous wolf-creature Warwick, where we are enveloped in a nightmarish whirlwind of red blood trails and clawed hands guiding us through the chaos.
The versatility of Arcane‘s visual style is just one of the many reasons it will be difficult to bid farewell to this groundbreaking series, even as it approaches its conclusive end. However, as reported by Variety on November 6, the series was initially planned as a five-season journey. Furthermore, Variety revealed that Arcane has cost an astounding $250 million to produce, making it the most expensive animated show in history. Given its substantial budget, it is unlikely we will witness anything quite like it in the near future — at least, not for a few more years. Until then, we can celebrate Arcane as a remarkable gem in the realm of Hextech storytelling.
The first three episodes of Arcane Season 2 are currently available for streaming on Netflix, with the next three episodes set to release on November 16 and November 23, respectively.
