This week marks a significant milestone as Walt Disney re-enters his beloved Magic Kingdom, thanks to the remarkable innovations from the talented team at Imagineering. This new experience showcases the latest advancements in audio-animatronics technology, a revolutionary concept that Walt Disney first introduced when he opened Disneyland 70 years ago. The evolution of these show robots has progressed from simple static figures with limited movement, like the charming singing birds in the Enchanted Tiki Room, to a sophisticated, roaming animatronic representation of Uncle Walt himself. Located in the Main Street Opera House, this (m)animatronic serves as the centerpiece of the show titled Walt Disney – A Magical Life, where he, alongside Disney CEO Bob Iger as the narrator, takes center stage to share his life story.
The journey begins with Bob Iger introducing the legendary figure who has become synonymous with countless childhood memories and classic films. Through a captivating film presentation, we gain insights into Walt Disney’s upbringing, narrated in his own words. He shares how he harnessed his creativity to escape the confines of farm life, leading him to the bustling streets of Hollywood with the iconic help of Mickey Mouse. As the narrative unfolds, we learn about the profound influence of his daughters on his vision to create a joyful family destination, which ultimately blossomed into the groundbreaking concept of Disneyland. When the curtain rises, guests find themselves immersed in a recreation of Walt’s office, where he sits at his desk, captivating the audience with heartfelt anecdotes about his contributions to the company. The surreal experience is accentuated by his warm, approachable demeanor, reminiscent of the man who once introduced The Wonderful World of Disney on television, making it a poignant moment for those who have always wondered what it would be like to encounter Walt in the park.
While comparisons to Westworld may arise, it’s essential to clarify that the goal isn’t to create a sentient attraction that mirrors the world Walt Disney built. Instead, this project serves as an artistic endeavor to evoke the spirit and legacy of the man in his iconic grey suit, surrounded by the flurry of activity in his workspace. The Imagineers involved in this project elaborated on the motivations behind bringing Walt Disney back to his home park in celebration of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary.
Tom Fitzgerald, an esteemed Imagineer and senior creative lead for this groundbreaking initiative, expressed his excitement, stating, “We’re thrilled to unveil this new chapter in the story of Walt Disney to our guests. Growing up, I, like millions of Americans, would watch Walt Disney on television. He would enter our living rooms, leaning over his desk and sharing thrilling updates about what awaited us. However, we realized that many today lack that personal connection to him, not fully understanding that Walt Disney was not just a brand, but a real person with a remarkable story,” he shared.
“Our goal was to bridge the gap between the nostalgia we felt growing up with Walt Disney and today’s audience. His narrative carries timeless relevance, and the insights gained from his life experiences are invaluable. Messages like pursuing your dreams, persevering in the face of adversity, transforming setbacks into opportunities, and always giving your best resonate just as strongly today as they did during Walt’s era,” Fitzgerald continued.
Walt Disney stands as one of the last modern icons who believed in the possibility of rising from humble beginnings through sheer determination, a notion that seems increasingly like a fairy tale in today’s world. While the true Walt Disney was undoubtedly a complex individual, progressive for his time yet not without controversy, this portrayal serves as an idealized representation of his legacy. The animatronic even recites his famous mantra, “keep moving forward,” a philosophy that has guided me through challenges in my own journey as a writer. Hearing him deliver that line was an emotional moment; it was a reminder I desperately needed. However, the experience was also slightly unsettling, encountering a robot designed to mimic his movements while exuding a twinkle in his eye.
Fitzgerald took a moment to remind the audience that creating a humanlike animatronic isn’t entirely new territory for Imagineering. “We have brought to life every president and various movie stars,” he noted, referencing the static likeness of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and the many sitting presidents featured in their attractions.
“However, when the project involves crafting an animatronic figure of Walt Disney, it comes with immense responsibility. Much like Walt felt when he brought Abraham Lincoln to life for the New York World’s Fair in 1964, this project became a monumental challenge for our team. We aimed to redefine the art form and technology to create a truly authentic representation of Walt Disney. Thanks to recent advancements, we felt confident in our ability to achieve that authenticity,” Fitzgerald explained.
He highlighted the intentionality behind the animatronic’s eye twinkle. “We collaborated with experts to understand that the glimmer in the eye is a phenomenon known as corneal bulge. Previously, our figures lacked this detail. We replicated the corneal bulge so that when you gaze upon him, you can see that captivating glint in his eye, which is remarkable,” Fitzgerald shared. Furthermore, the facial animation is driven by a nuanced understanding of Walt Disney’s facial muscle movements, derived from extensive archival footage analyzed to capture his essence accurately.
This endeavor is indeed a momentous occasion, and it invites a sense of wonder. However, it also prompts some ethical questions about the responsibilities that come with such technological advancements. Should we tread carefully with our ambitions?
“Thanks to these ambitious moon shots and extensive research, we genuinely believe this is the most fluid performance we’ve ever achieved in an audio-animatronics figure. It’s fascinating because, unlike figures of presidents or fictional characters, Walt Disney is someone we all recognize. If we misrepresent him, audiences will immediately notice, thinking, ‘No, that’s not how Walt would have gestured. He’d have held his hands differently,’” explained Jeff Shaver-Moskowitz, portfolio executive creative producer at Walt Disney Imagineering.
“Therefore, we dedicated significant time to studying Walt Disney’s mannerisms and appearance to ensure our portrayal is as accurate as possible, as Walt Disney holds a special place in our hearts. This project isn’t merely about creating a figure that narrates his story; it’s a heartfelt tribute to a legacy we all cherish. We have a profound love for Walt Disney and his contributions, and this is our way of giving back. While the figure is undeniably the focal point, an immense amount of technology has also gone into creating the immersive environment surrounding him,” Shaver-Moskowitz added.
Witnessing one visionary’s dream transform into a remarkably lifelike animatronic is a testament to the journey that began with a mouse and has now led to a reality where an entirely different kind of mouse might be the catalyst for activating this animatronic.
Walt Disney – A Magical Life is set to premiere on July 17 at Disneyland.
