As the holiday season approaches, Threads is rolling out a series of updates and enhancements aimed at improving user engagement. This surge in activity coincides with a growing interest in Bluesky, although the connection between the two may be coincidental.
On Friday, Adam Mosseri, the chief of Instagram, revealed that Threads is currently testing new methods for showcasing trending topics within the app. Additionally, the platform is introducing new search filters designed to enhance the user discovery experience significantly.
In a bid to provide users with comprehensive insights, Mosseri shared that Threads will be expanding its list of AI-generated trends. This initiative aims to add depth and context to the ongoing discussions, making it easier for users to grasp what is currently capturing attention.
This image illustrates the current trending topic display on Threads, which was made available to all U.S. users back in March. The updated format will feature a broader range of trends alongside more AI components, enriching the user’s browsing experience.
According to Mosseri:
“We’re starting a test showing more than five trending topics on Threads, and we’re using Meta AI to summarize those trends. You can access all related content, while also receiving a brief description of the ongoing discussions.”
It’s important to note that the determination of trends has always relied on Meta’s advanced AI systems, as outlined in their original process. The changes being implemented now focus on expanding the number of listed trends and incorporating AI-generated summaries for each trend, rather than simply highlighting a related post.
While this represents an evolution rather than a complete overhaul of the existing process, it aligns Threads’ trending list more closely with the X platform, which utilizes AI-generated topic summaries to enhance user engagement.

As demonstrated in the example, X’s Grok-generated trend summaries offer descriptions of each trend, which is the trajectory Threads is now pursuing. However, it’s worth mentioning that Grok summaries have had inconsistencies in accuracy, indicating that Threads may require additional time and testing before rolling out this feature to all users.
According to Mosseri, this testing phase is currently limited to a small group of U.S. users.
In addition to trending topics, Threads is enhancing its search functionality by introducing more filters and tools to help users locate relevant posts more efficiently.
“With the updated search experience, users will now have the capability to search within a specific date range or to find posts from a particular account.”

As illustrated in this example, the revamped search experience on Threads will facilitate more in-depth searches, significantly benefiting social media managers and content creators in their quest for specific information and interactions.
Enhanced search capabilities have been a widely requested feature from users, alongside the ability to view videos in landscape mode, which is also included in the latest updates from Threads:
According to Threads engineer Tim Oliver, users can now simply rotate their phones to view videos on Threads in landscape format.
This seemingly minor adjustment is quite significant, as it aligns Threads more closely with other modern video viewing experiences. It particularly enhances the platform’s usability for watching content such as sports highlights, which is crucial for Threads as it seeks to compete with other established social media platforms.
Interestingly, while Threads is making these strides, the X project led by Elon Musk doesn’t appear to be the primary focus for the Threads team. The rise of Bluesky has raised some concerns at Meta Headquarters, prompting a proactive approach to updates. Despite being smaller than Threads, Bluesky’s momentum shift has attracted attention, suggesting that Threads is keen on maintaining its competitive edge in real-time social media.
Ultimately, these updates may be part of a strategic plan in anticipation of increased user activity during the holiday season.
Regardless of the motivation, Threads continues to roll out exciting features and enhancements, solidifying its position as a formidable player in the ever-evolving social media landscape.
