Twitch may be the platform that most individuals think of when it comes to livestreaming, but recent statistics reveal a different narrative.
According to the latest insights provided by Stream Charts, Amazon’s livestreaming powerhouse has now fallen to third place globally. The Global Livestreaming Landscape report for the first quarter of the year, which was released on April 29, indicates that TikTok Live is currently leading, with YouTube Live holding the top spot.
Twitch streamers’ uploads, highlights capped at 100 hours
During the first quarter of the year, TikTok Live achieved a staggering total of over 8 billion hours watched from January to March, reflecting a remarkable 30 percent increase compared to the last quarter of the previous year. This impressive growth can be attributed in part to the surging popularity of IRL content and a series of major gaming events across Southeast Asia that attracted vast audiences.

Another significant factor contributing to TikTok’s impressive ascent is its robust e-commerce engine. When combined with the seamless experience of tuning into a stream directly from a mobile device, it’s clear that TikTok’s upward trajectory in viewership is likely to continue unabated. This unique blend of entertainment and commerce provides users with a compelling reason to engage with the platform.
Perhaps the most notable advantage that TikTok holds over Twitch is its superior content discovery capabilities. The platform is designed to promote new creators organically, a feature that has been a persistent challenge for Twitch over the years. This disparity has become so pronounced that many Twitch streamers now leverage TikTok clips to expand their audience and redirect viewers to their longer-form content.
According to the report, Twitch seems to be experiencing a state of stagnation. The platform recorded 4.84 billion hours watched, which marks a slight 1-2 percent decline from the previous quarter. While Twitch continues to maintain its foothold in the gaming sector, overall growth appears to be lackluster. In contrast, YouTube persists in its dominance with an astounding 14.98 billion watch hours in the first quarter alone, showcasing the platform’s vast reach and diverse offerings.
Even though Twitch has slipped to third place, it still remains a member of the elite group of global streaming platforms. Competing contenders like Kick and Rumble have yet to come close to Twitch’s achievements, capturing merely 2.9 percent and 0.5 percent of global watch hours, respectively. This indicates that while Twitch faces challenges, it still holds a significant position in the streaming landscape.
