If you’re contemplating a transition from an old tablet to a cutting-edge iPad, the new iPad A16 stands out as an excellent choice. Recognized as the top budget iPad at its standard price, it is currently available for just $299 at major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy. This represents the lowest price we have recorded, a significant $50 reduction from Apple’s suggested retail price (MSRP). It’s important to note that this promotional price applies to the base model, which offers 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM, and is available in all four attractive color options.
Launched in March, Apple’s iPad A16 has quickly earned its place as our top recommendation in the iPad buying guide for budget-conscious consumers. While it may lack the refinement and robust performance of the iPad Air, which excels in more demanding tasks, and its non-laminated display can struggle against glare, it remains a cost-effective option. For the average user’s needs, this iPad is more than sufficient. Our review awarded it a commendable score of 84, reflecting its overall value and functionality.

The entry-level iPad from Apple is now more affordable than ever. The A16 iPad has reached a historic low price of $299.

Unlike previous models, Apple has maintained the same pricing strategy for this latest base iPad. However, it has enhanced the device by adding an extra 2GB of RAM, doubling the storage capacity, and integrating a more powerful chipset that can efficiently handle most everyday tasks. This includes moderate gaming and lighter media editing, making it a versatile choice for users. It is worth mentioning that the iPad does not support Apple Intelligence, which can be seen as either a benefit or drawback, depending on your perspective regarding generative AI.
The build quality of the iPad A16 remains impressive, and users can expect approximately 10 hours of battery life on a full charge, contingent on the types of tasks performed. However, it’s important to note that the accessory compatibility leaves something to be desired. The device supports basic USB-C connections as well as the first-generation Apple Pencil, neither of which can charge wirelessly when attached magnetically to the side of the tablet. Instead, users will need a USB-C cable and/or a USB-C to Lightning adapter for charging. The support for the Magic Keyboard is also subpar, as it can be difficult to stabilize on your lap when in use.
If the accessory limitations are not a dealbreaker for you, the iPad A16 could be the ideal tablet to fulfill your requirements. While the iPad Air and Pro lineups feature more advanced chipsets, this model is perfect for those who simply want a reliable iPad for watching movies during flights or reading the news affordably. It provides great value without compromising on essential features.
