Backrooms tells the story of a therapist on a quest to find her missing patient. This film marks the directorial debut of YouTuber Kane Parsons, who drew inspiration from his own found-footage anthology series showcased on his channel.
The roots of this unsettling concept trace back to 2019, when a 4chan user encouraged others to share their most “disquieting” images. In response, one participant shared a haunting picture of a yellow-tinted room, reminiscent of the one featured in the 2026 horror film.
“If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where it’s nothing but the smell of damp carpet, the madness of a mono-yellow hue, the endless background drone of fluorescent lights buzzing, and around six hundred million square miles of randomly divided empty rooms where you could find yourself trapped,” the 4chan user described. “Beware if you hear something lurking nearby, because it has certainly heard you.”
