It is essential to acknowledge the efforts of X’s Community Notes team in their ongoing pursuit to enhance the platform’s functionality. While I may have reservations about the effectiveness of the Community Notes approach in curbing the proliferation of misinformation on the app—especially when relied upon as the sole method without sufficient internal moderation—I genuinely appreciate the team’s commitment to rolling out updates aimed at addressing significant issues within the Notes system.
Recently, the Community Notes team at X announced an innovative experiment designed to showcase content that receives approval from users with opposing political viewpoints. This initiative aims to foster understanding and reduce polarization within the app, encouraging users to engage in more constructive conversations.
In this example, X is set to introduce a feature that will present some users, starting with Community Notes contributors, prompts in the lower section of select X posts. These prompts will highlight posts that have garnered likes from individuals across the ideological spectrum, thus encouraging diverse perspectives and reducing echo chambers.
Upon clicking the “What do you think?” prompt, users will have the opportunity to provide feedback to the X team regarding their viewpoints on the specific post. This feedback mechanism could prove invaluable in identifying common sources of division and enhancing content quality on the platform.
According to an official statement from X:
“A selected group of Community Notes contributors—representing a broad spectrum of perspectives—will sometimes encounter a new prompt within the application. This prompt will appear based on initial and limited Like signals associated with the post. Contributors will then have the ability to rate and offer additional feedback about the post, contributing to the development of an open-source algorithm that aims to effectively identify posts that receive approval from users with differing viewpoints.”
X has clarified that these ratings will not influence a post’s reach or visibility. However, they stated:
“Depending on insights and feedback garnered from the pilot program, there is a possibility that in the future, these ratings could help highlight posts that are appreciated by individuals who typically disagree.”
Why does this matter?
The significance lies in the fact that political discord represents a fundamental challenge within the Community Notes system. Currently, Community Notes are only displayed on the app when assessors with contrasting political views concur that a note is necessary. This stipulation has resulted in numerous Community Notes never being showcased, despite their potential to address blatant misinformation.
Indeed, research by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) last year revealed that a staggering 73% of submitted Community Notes related to political issues are never displayed on X, despite often containing valuable context. Moreover, a study conducted earlier this year by the Spanish fact-checking organization Maldita indicated that 85% of all Community Notes remain unseen by X users for similar reasons.
In many cases, users will never reach consensus on contentious topics, particularly those involving divisive misinformation surrounding hot-button political matters.
Such challenges have intensified in today’s environment, where even the President of the United States is known to amplify dubious claims. Consequently, Community Notes frequently fails to provide users with essential contextual information, as there is often a lack of agreement on the relevance of such context.
However, if X can successfully highlight more instances of agreement, this might help mitigate conflicts and encourage users to adopt a more objective perspective on contentious issues.
It is unlikely that voters aligned with either the Republican or Democratic parties will ever reach a consensus on whether the 2020 U.S. Election was manipulated. Regardless of the evidence presented, it seems improbable that agreement will be achieved. Nonetheless, if X can foster greater community alignment by showcasing cases of agreement to respective users, it could potentially stimulate more constructive conversations on a wider range of topics, rather than confining people to their respective echo chambers.
This initiative is worth pursuing, as it represents a relatively straightforward strategy to better illustrate areas of consensus among users.
Moreover, if X can effectively dilute the divisive nature of political discourse and ensure that more pertinent and valuable Community Notes are displayed within the app, this could signify a major advancement in safeguarding users on the platform.
