Nintendo recently hosted an exciting live stream event on May 6, unveiling the much-anticipated Star Fox remake, a modernized version of the beloved N64 classic, specifically designed for the Nintendo Switch 2. Set to launch on June 25, the game promises to deliver engaging new gameplay modes alongside the beloved online play features, ensuring that both new and returning players can enjoy a fresh experience.
The updated Star Fox boasts stunning reimagined visuals and redesigned characters that add a contemporary flair reminiscent of Fantastic Mr. Star Fox. Nintendo describes this remake as “a cinematic take,” which is evident in the inclusion of new cutscenes featuring full voice acting and exciting mission briefings that enhance the storytelling experience between levels. Players can expect a campaign mode offering three difficulty settings—easy, normal, and expert—where the expert mode must be unlocked through exceptional gameplay. Additionally, a challenge mode introduces new objectives, while a thrilling battle mode offers a four-on-four dogfighting arena across three unique stages: a control-point game on Corneria, a crystal-collection challenge on Fichina, and a fetch quest against space pirates in Sector Y, allowing for both private matches and an open queue, with full support for GameShare.
The game’s stage flow and layout will closely mirror the original, providing a sense of nostalgia for longtime fans, while the beloved banter among characters like Fox, Falco, Slippy, and Peppy remains intact. The new Star Fox features local co-op gameplay throughout the entire campaign, where one player takes on the role of the pilot while another acts as the gunner. Additionally, it will support the revamped N64 controller and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, offering versatile control options. As a special feature of the Switch 2, players can interact as any of the main crew members using customizable avatars in GameChat, enhancing the social aspect of gameplay.
Nintendo provided an exhilarating glimpse of the updated Star Fox in action, showcasing the iconic Arwing performing maneuvers such as flying, braking, boosting, and barrel rolling, alongside the iconic Blue-Marine submersible navigating through aquatic enemies. The live stream concluded with a captivating look at the game’s prologue, which introduced a cast of high-flying anthropomorphic characters, including Fox’s father, James McCloud, and the formidable Pigma, setting the stage for an epic adventure.
