Social Media Platform: BuzzFeed’s Positive New Launch

Every year, new social media platforms emerge, sparking curiosity among marketers about their potential. Questions arise regarding the necessity of establishing a presence on these platforms and the opportunities they might present. Typically, my criteria for discussing a new application revolves around its user base reaching 10 million users. Anything below that threshold tends to lack relevance, as the buzz surrounding it may not translate into substantial engagement or interest.

In this instance, I’m making an exception due to the unique strategy adopted by BuzzFeed. This initiative marks a groundbreaking moment, as it is the first time an internet-borne company has proactively developed its own social media app.

The accompanying image is a glimpse of the new website for BuzzFeed’s “Island” social media app. We are speculating that it is referred to as “Island” based on the URL, although BuzzFeed has yet to make an official announcement regarding the project’s name.

BuzzFeed, under the leadership of Jonah Peretti, is attempting to create its own social network as a response to the adverse effects associated with existing popular social media applications. These negative impacts are primarily driven by AI algorithms that prioritize user engagement over content quality.

As Peretti eloquently articulates:

“Deep learning AIs are engineered to maximize the time users spend on these platforms. When companies rely solely on AI to enhance usage without caring about content quality, they inadvertently promote content that fosters addiction. This results in a cycle that prioritizes content that elicits compulsive reactions rather than the most valuable or meaningful content.”

Peretti highlights a significant flaw in the broader internet landscape: emotional responses drive user engagement. This leads to the creation of content that is designed to provoke strong emotions, which can often result in increased political polarization.

Numerous studies have indicated that emotions such as anger and fear are the most effective at driving engagement, compelling content creators to gravitate towards these types of narratives. This tendency is arguably a major contributor to the heightened political divisions we observe today.

Peretti refers to this style of content as “SNARF,” emphasizing how AI algorithms exacerbate its prevalence.

“We’re all familiar with this kind of content, especially those of us who are chronically online. Content creators exaggerate stakes (S) to make their content urgent and existential. They manufacture novelty (N) and spin their content as unprecedented and unique. They manipulate anger (A) to drive engagement via outrage. They hack retention (R) by withholding information and promising a payoff at the end of a video. And they provoke fear (F) to make people focus with urgency on their content.”

Interestingly, BuzzFeed has benefited significantly from this engagement-driven content strategy, particularly through attention-grabbing headlines designed to resonate with Meta’s algorithms on platforms like Facebook.

However, Peretti is now seeking to challenge the norm by developing a social network that eschews these addictive tactics.

The public is becoming increasingly aware of the system’s flaws. There is a growing desire for a different approach.”

What will set BuzzFeed’s new social network apart from existing platforms?

Peretti asserts that their platform will prioritize human curation and focus on valuable stories, rather than just chasing the latest dopamine hits that many current platforms promote.

“We do the doomscrolling for you, allowing you to follow the biggest trends, discover hidden gems, and stay informed without squandering your time or jeopardizing your mental health. Our approach will also counter negativity by injecting humor into our content, poking fun at the absurdities and ridiculousness of those in power.”

The initiative aims to integrate content from HuffPost, Tasty, and other BuzzFeed properties, creating a platform that feels more akin to a news app rather than a traditional social network.

However, Peretti is marketing it as a social media alternative, and it remains to be seen how these components will effectively interconnect.

“We will ensure that our community’s joy and humanity are preserved and celebrated. While SNARF may drive engagement, our goal is to break through that noise with humor, joy, and a touch of righteous indignation. Our mission is to revitalize the internet with lighthearted content that entertains, ranging from celebrity gossip to shopping tips and personal advice.”

While the concept is intriguing, I have my reservations about its viability as a true competitor to existing social media platforms. It seems more like a refined version of BuzzFeed’s current offerings, presented as an app rather than an authentic social network. However, I remain open to the possibility that there might be more depth to this initiative than it initially appears.

Peretti further emphasizes that the platform “will utilize AI to empower users rather than diminish their agency.”

While the concept holds promise, the execution appears as though it could lead to a community app resembling the comment sections of BuzzFeed coming to life.

Social networks should fundamentally be platforms that encourage user contributions, rather than merely showcasing specific publications. Given Peretti’s extensive experience in the industry, it will be fascinating to see what strategies he implements to foster active user participation.

I largely agree with Peretti’s observations regarding the detrimental influence of social media and digital algorithms on our society, leading to polarized, sensationalized narratives.

Publications striving for survival often feel compelled to adopt divisive stances, leading to an “us versus them” mentality. This dynamic entrenches attitudes that reinforce societal division.

The information ecosystem is undoubtedly fractured, but the true remedy lies in reshaping the incentives that drive these platforms. By prioritizing accuracy over mere engagement, we can begin to mend the situation.

Nonetheless, this shift may not eradicate the tendency for people to gravitate towards sensational narratives, which could introduce biases in content selection.

However, given Peretti’s profound understanding of these issues, it will be intriguing to observe the strategies he deploys to tackle them effectively.
