Before the release of The Odyssey, writer-director Christopher Nolan praised one standout cast member: Samantha Morton, who plays a pivotal role in the film. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he highlighted how her character “comes in and changes the dynamic,” emphasizing that “there are no limitations on her performance.”
Nolan’s admiration extended to a comparison made by his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, who likened Morton’s performance to the powerful presence of Heath Ledger in Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
Now that the film is in theaters, audiences can witness Morton’s compelling portrayal of Circe, a sorceress known for transforming Odysseus’ men into pigs. In a recent conversation with the Hollywood Reporter, Morton, recognized by genre enthusiasts for her roles in Minority Report and The Walking Dead, revealed her creative approach to this iconic character.
Morton confessed that she had never read Homer’s ancient Greek epic that inspired the film, although she recalled seeing a parody of it on The Simpsons. “But the script captivated me, and I was deeply moved by how contemporary it felt,” she shared with THR. “Upon landing the role, my excitement was immense, as I wanted to deliver for Chris and [producer] Emma [Thomas] and bring to life what my instincts suggested.”
She carried that initial impression of the script into her interpretation of Circe. “I perceived her as incredibly modern. I could relate to her. She felt like my sister, my mother, my grandmother, my aunt, my neighbor. She seemed very real and vividly defined,” Morton explained.
“I reflect on the fundamental strength of Circe. It’s remarkable what Chris has accomplished with the female characters in the film. She feels so complete, so fully realized, yet our time with her is brief. In that short span, there’s much to accomplish, but it doesn’t feel hurried or forced. She embodies every woman. She represents all of us. I connected with that on a deep level,” Morton elaborated.
The Odyssey is currently showing in theaters.
