What Insights Does Silo Season 3, Episode 8 Provide About the Apocalypse?

Following a shocking abduction by their own vehicle and an enigmatic journey by flight and helicopter, Episode 8 features Daniel (Ashley Zukerman), Helen (Jessica Henwick), and Charles (Jessica Brown Findlay) dining with the creators of the silos: billionaire Per Stensen (Colin Hanks) and Senator Thurman (Laura Innes).

Stensen reveals that he is currently overseeing the creation of 50 silos designed to house people who may need to repopulate the earth in the event of an apocalypse.

“The threats we face—nuclear war, climate change, viral pandemics, asteroid impacts, artificial intelligence, and others yet unimagined—one stands out as the most perilous: nanotechnology,” he asserts. “This threat not only remains unseen but is also the reason I have amassed unparalleled wealth. I foresaw that a hostile government would soon discover that constructing a nanoweapon would be far less expensive than creating a nuclear weapon.”

Stensen and Senator Thurman further disclose that Iran has already developed nanoweapons and attempted to sabotage U.S. research, escalating tensions between the two nations into warfare.

How Does Nanotechnology Relate to Charles’ Mission?

Recall Charles’ mission from episode 1, where her aircraft was enveloped by a mysterious, viscous cloud. The true objective of that operation was to target a nanotechnology facility established by Iran in the mountains. as Charles later reveals, they never reached their intended target because their mission was merely a diversion. The cloud they encountered was Iran’s nanoweapon. While Charles’ team faced dire circumstances, another unit was secretly tunneling beneath the facility, poised to detonate it.

Is Nanotechnology the Catalyst for the Apocalypse in Silo?

It remains uncertain, but the narrative appears to be steering in that direction.

Stensen, an expert in nanotechnology, expresses his deep-seated fears regarding this technology, indicating that he is constructing an underground city to shelter humanity when disaster strikes. The fact that both the U.S. and Iran possess this technology and have weaponized it suggests that Stensen’s dinner conversation may hold some truth. It seems plausible that this advanced, invisible weaponry could ultimately compel people to seek refuge underground.
